FYI: as of today, Office Depot will only allow *either* one Expo coupon *or* one Sharpie coupon, per customer. You read that right: you can use one or the other. Not one of each, not multiples of one or both, only one Expo *or* one Sharpie.
The coupons do not have limits on them, but apparently Office Depot corporate sent a memo to all its stores this morning; I politely demanded to see this memo, and the cashier was correct about what it said. The cashier told me it was “really chaotic” yesterday with people coming in to get the free Expo dry erase markers and cheap Sharpies. Although the store already had a limit of 3 per customer, and they’re getting reimbursed by the manufacturer, so I’m not quite sure what the problem is.
I politely asked the cashier to convey to management that customers were not happy about this, and then I had her cancel out the rest of my order.
What do you think, Jill? I was just trying to buy 2 packs of Expos and 2 packs of Sharpies, along with a few other school supplies. Certainly not trying to buy out their stock or commit fraud! Seems to me like they handled this badly.

As much as we don’t like it, the reality is that stores do not have to allow shoppers to use coupons at all. Each store can set its own policy on things like this. I don’t think it’s very customer-friendly at all, especially since school supply shopping season is coming to an end.
You can always price-match the ad at another store that would welcome the business…

I think my main issue is that they did it “mid-stream”. Had it been posted in the ad, at least I would have had notice. But knowing that had I come in yesterday, instead of today, I could have used my coupons, doesn’t sit very well. I wonder what the issuer of the coupons would have to say about this.
At any rate, I feel Office Depot handled this badly. It doesn’t make me want to shop there, which I’m guessing is the opposite of what they want!

They did that to my husband yesterday too, so I had told him to bring me the ad and I will go in the evening to staples to price match (and he was surprised that staples price matched). I went to staples and with their price match guarantee of 110% the sharpies came out to be $.12 with tax, and the expo markers were $.06. The cashier at staples said they can only take one coupon per transaction but she would be willing to do separate transactions for me. I wish I had tried staples earlier in the school supplies shopping.
Now I’m just waiting for target to start putting the backpacks on clearance last year I picked up my son a backpack for $11-ish that was originally $40. He was happy to be able to use it this year.
