What does your local Jewel-Osco store mean to you? My local Jewel store is less than three miles from my front door, so it’s extremely convenient for me to run over and grab anything from impromptu dinner ingredients to pantry staples to bakery treats! I’m in my local store so often that I’ve gotten to know the manager, staff, and cashiers so well that they often tell me when something’s on sale that I might not have spotted in the ad.
I use Jewel-Osco’s MyMixx electronic coupons regularly too. While I’m still a big fan of paper coupons, I often find discounts on MyMixx for brands and products that aren’t available elsewhere. When I enter my MyMixx number in at the register, I also accumulate Gas Reward points to use when filling up my car. Thanks to my weekly Jewel-Osco trips, I usually save .20 per Gas Reward when I go to a Shell station — who doesn’t want to save on fuel? Jewel is my go-to destination each week for groceries and more.
I recently came down with a cold that seems to be taking longer than normal to shake. My days and nights have been filled with decongestants, cough drops and syrups. As we head into cough and cold season, keep in mind that Jewel-Osco is also a convenient place to pick up Signature Care™ cough and cold remedies.
As soon as I woke up with a sore throat and runny nose, I headed over to Jewel to make a “get well” basket for myself to keep beside the bed. I am a big fan of their Signature Care Nasal Decongestant Tablets. They contain the same active ingredient as the name brand, but they’re less than half the price of the national brand– I only paid $2.99 for a 24-pack at the pharmacy! I added some Signature Care honey menthol cough drops and Signature Care daytime and nighttime cold relief syrups to my basket.
I also picked up a new box of O Organics© Chai Spice Organic Tea. We already buy this tea regularly, but as I was rummaging through the kitchen, I discovered that our daughter took my previous supply of this tea back to college with her! O Organics Chai Spice tea is the perfect blend of cinnamon, clove, and cardamom flavors, and hot tea feels so good on a sore throat too.
Signature Care and O Organics products are available in the Chicago area exclusively at Jewel-Osco stores.I buy my Signature Care and O Organics products at my local Jewel-Osco, and you can also find them at all Albertsons Companies family of stores, including Albertsons, Safeway, ACME Markets, Vons, Pavilions, Randalls, Tom Thumb, Shaw’s, Star Market, United Express, United and Carrs/Safeway.
While I was at Jewel-Osco, I also picked up some O Organics ingredients to make one of my favorite cold-busting soups: Creamy Garlic Chicken Soup! Garlic has long been a home remedy for easing cold symptoms, and it doesn’t get much better than the creamy, buttery goodness of this soup. I’ve upped the protein of this soup too by including almond milk, as extra protein is also supposed to help shorten colds.
This soup is so rich and good that my healthy family quickly dished out the rest for themselves! The scent of butter and garlic quickly fills the house when I make this, and there are never leftovers. If you keep cooked, shredded chicken on hand in the refrigerator or freezer, it’s even quicker to make. I usually cook extra chicken at the beginning of the week, then use it for easy meal preparation over subsequent days. As I already had the shredded chicken prepared, this soup took just minutes to make.
Creamy garlic chicken soup
(Serves four)
- 4 oz. (half brick) O Organics cream cheese
- 3 cups O Organics chicken broth
- 1 cup O Organics almond milk
- 2 TSP O Organics minced garlic
- 2 cups cooked O Organics shredded chicken
- 2 TBSP O Organics butter
- 1/4 teaspoon O Organics pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 TBSP onion powder
- 1 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 TSP parsley flakes
Melt butter on stovetop in a medium-sized pot. Add shredded chicken and minced garlic, and stir until the butter begins to brown. Add cream cheese, chicken broth, almond milk, and cream to pot. Bring to boil, then turn heat to simmer.
While stirring, add onion powder, salt and pepper, and parsley flakes. Simmer for another five minutes and serve.

I’m not much for homeopathic treatment, but I’ve found Zicam to be effective in preventing colds when started as soon as the first scratch or sniffle appears. When I do get a cold anyway, they seem to be less severe.
Several years ago Menards was practically giving them away because they were close to date code. Free and/or cheap after rebate. I stocked up then. They are now past date code, but almost all medications (non-refrigerated) are good for many years past their dates. We both just used some this past week.
As to soup, having a Jewish heritage, I was always given Chicken soup. But the spicy food lover in me now goes for either Chinese or Thai Hot & Sour when available. They really clear out your sinuses!

This soup looks good. O Organics are not available in my area. Have you made this with 2% milk? I’m going to make this soon.

Judy, yes, you can make it with 2% milk instead — it’s delicious either way :)
