Just as the after-Christmas sales have ended, and many of us have stocked up on holiday gear for next year…along come the clothing and toy sales. If you’ve taken my Super-Couponing 2 class, you know that January is my favorite month of the year to shop for clothes and toys!
Today I embarked on a shopping adventure that began at Old Navy for their 50% off clearance sale and ended at Target’s 75% off toy sale…
Part 1: Old Navy
After hearing that Old Navy’s amazing annual clearance sale was starting today, my beautiful Mom offered to have a play day with her grandsons so I could shop. (Thanks Mom!)
Old Navy didn’t disappoint. This is the fourth year I’ve shopped the January sale, and I’ve really come to look forward to it. You never know what you’ll find, but you can usually count on discounted winter coats, children’s clothing in the $2-$3 range, and a few surprises along the way too. I purchase a large portion of what my sons will wear over the next year during this sale, year after year.
I had printed a wonderful 25% off entire purchase coupon from Old Navy’s site. Then, while I was at the store, an employee told me that if I paid with either an Old Navy credit card or an Old Navy gift card, I’d get another 10% off the prices! My father-in-law just gave me an Old Navy gift card for my birthday, so I was ready to do some serious shopping damage :)
Here are some of the things I bought:
Boys’ jeans – $9.99
. $5.00 w/ 50% off. $3.75 w/25% off. $3.38 w/final 10% off!
Flannel-lined boys’ jeans – $12.99
. $7.50 w/50% off . $5.63 w/25% off . $5.07 w/final 10% off!
Boys’ khakis – $1.97
. $0.99 w/50% off. $0.74 w/25% off. $0.67 w/final 10% off!
Women’s dress pants – $7.49
. $3.75 w/50% off. $2.81 w/25% off. $2.53 w/final 10% off!
Women’s jeans – $13.49
. $6.75 w/50% off. $5.06 w/25% off. $4.56 w/final 10% off!
Boys’ pajamas – $3.97
. $1.99 w/50% off. $1.49 w/25% off. $1.25 w/final 10% off!
Men’s corduroy pants – $7.49
. $3.75 w/50% off. $2.81 w/25% off. $2.53 w/final 10% off!
Boys’ long-sleeve t-shirts – $1.97
. $0.99 w/50% off. $0.74 w/25% off. $0.67 w/final 10% off!
Boys’ hi-top sneakers (Converse knockoffs) – $8.47
. $4.24 w/50% off. $3.18 w/25% off. $2.87 w/final 10% off!
I also have to note that it was wonderful to run into so many readers of my blog at Old Navy. A big thanks to one reader (I’m sorry I didn’t catch your name!) who alerted me to boys’ winter coats, marked $11.49, that were actually ringing up at $3.97… fabulous!
Then, as I was getting ready to head to the checkout, another blog reader stopped me at Old Navy and said Target had dropped toys to 75% — she’d just come from there. I called my mom and asked if she minded keeping my boys a little longer today :)
Part 2: Target
Arriving at Target, I saw shoppers swarming on the toy clearance aisle like ants at a picnic! And why shouldn’t they? The 75% off toy sale is another great event that shoppers look forward to each year around this time.
Here’s what I picked up today:
Fisher-Price Smart Sports
(It’s like a junior Wii for kids to play baseball, tennis and golf with the TV)
Regularly $59.99. 75% off = $14.98
Toy Story expandable playset
Regularly $49.99. 75% off = $12.48
Mr. Bump medical kit
Regularly $19.99. 75% off = $4.98
Circo wooden shape sorter
Regularly $9.99. 75% off = $2.48
Spongebob DVD game
Regularly $19.99. 75% off = $4.98
Monopoly theme packs (game add-on sets)
Regularly $9.99. 75% off = $2.48
Deal or No Deal electronic game
Regularly $19.99. 75% off = $4.98
EyeClops Mini Projector
(It’s a home projector that can project TV or movies onto a wall for “large screen” viewing – looks fun!)
Regularly $99.99. 75% off = $24.98
And lastly… I was thrilled to find Fisher-Price Smart Cycle games 75% off. Last year I picked up the Smart Cycle for $24.98 at 75% off after Christmas – it usually sells for $99. The games are regularly $24.99… but at 75% off, they were just $6.24!
Other Target notables – the air hockey and foosball/game tables are currently 50% off, putting them in the $30-$40 range… and they’ll drop again. Circo train tables were 75% off, priced at $20 and change. Great deals!
I am happily on track to finish my toy shopping in January again this year! What have you found? Many of our Forum readers are sharing their Old Navy finds in this discussion too…

That is just amazing. And you got an extra 10% off for using your Old Navy charge? Nice. I used mine yesterday and didn’t get that discount….maybe I should call them and ask….? I did get that discount when I bought of bunch of things just before Christmas, I didn’t realize they were still offering it.

I think the Joliet Old Navy’s prices are lower than other stores. My friend came over yesterday and my items ranged from .59 to 2.XX and hers were in the $3-$5 range….maybe Joliet went apey with the clearance gun.
I was also told by a cashier that the manager does not allow you to split the orders. I had 2 $10 off $50 coupons. The cashier said it didn’t make sense and was really nice and did it, but told me to beware of the manager. She said people have left piles of clothes there when she didn’t allow that.

Hi there – Please note in Algonquin Old Navy, I also was dismayed at lack of boys stuff until I started perusing back the tables in boys area and found that a bunch of their clearance stuff was mixed in with regular price!!! I was there Sat around 3pm and there was still a lot of clearance boys shirts (on the 2 tables – one on the right and one on the left – back with all the regular priced goods). Hope it helps someone! Happy Shopping
