This week’s syndicated Super-Couponing Tips column is entitled “Readers’ reasons for not using coupons.” Here’s an excerpt:
“You asked why people coupon. I can tell you why I do not.
“I don’t coupon because I don’t buy processed foods, except a few crackers and canned tomatoes. Out of 100 possible coupons in a flier, there might be two I could use, so the wasted time is more valuable than the 50 cents I could have saved by buying four tubes of not-my-favorite brand of toothpaste. I’m happy that so many people seem to save so much by using coupons, but it worries me to think about what they are actually eating and I question the nutritional price they are paying.”

I completely agree with no longer using coupons. I used to use them in the past and scheduled my shopping around the sales, but my diet has changed. I try not to buy boxed, frozen, helpers, etc that are high in calories, sodium and sugar. I’m trying my hardest to buy items that are considered to be real food. Gone are high sugar cereals, cereal bars, frozen pizzas, peanut butters, jellies, sodas, high fruit juices and instead, making my own cereal from granola that I’ve either made or purchased, making my own pizzas with fresh veggies and cheese. It’s been a challenge but I feel better about providing this to my family. I feel I save money making things on my own as well, no coupons needed. The selection of food coupons are mainly junk food and that’s a shame for us that are trying hard to eat well. I do use coupons at CVS, Kohls, etc. I feel where I can do better is with IBotta, Checkout 51 and SavingStar. I do feel these help with real food items like milk, eggs, etc. You’ve taught me how to stack discount gift cards and sales and cashback sites that I find genius! Great article and replies. Thanks!
