There’s a new product on the shelves of your local Jewel-Osco store, and you may have seen it in the meat market recently: Open Nature® Air Chilled Chicken. Many Jewel shoppers are already familiar with the quality of the Open Nature brand… but what exactly is air chilled chicken? I wasn’t sure, so I wanted to learn more.
Air chilling is a process that’s been popular in Europe for over forty years. When raw chicken is processed, it is typically cooled in tubs of cold water. This causes chicken to soak up some of the water, which affects the flavor. In contrast, air chilled chicken is individually processed by suspending it in air and chilling it for several hours through multiple, purified air-cooled chambers.
Because the natural juices of the meat are not diluted, air chilled chicken tastes better. Air chilled chicken cooks more quickly too, and if you love crispy skin, you’ll be very happy the first time you cook this, as there is no excess water to prevent the skin from getting nice and crunchy in the oven or on the grill!
Open Nature’s air chilled chicken is also different than any other chicken you’ve tried before from Jewel, as it’s engineered to have the best possible taste. The chickens are fed a proprietary vegetarian flaxseed diet, which equals up to 300% higher Omega-3s in the meat! Open Nature air chilled chicken also has lower cholesterol than conventionally-raised chickens.
Other benefits? Open Nature air chilled chickens are American Humane-certified cage-free birds. There are no added hormones and no antibiotics added to them.
As part of this product’s launch in stores, Jewel-Osco asked me to try Open Nature Air Chilled Chicken and share my thoughts with you. I prepared some bone-in chicken thighs with a simple olive oil rub and a few shakes of salt and pepper. It’s one of my quick, go-to recipes for any bone-in chicken:
Quick & Easy Olive Oil Pepper Chicken
- Four Open Nature® Air Chilled Chicken thighs
- 1/4 cup olive oil
- Salt and pepper
Preheat oven to 425°. Pat chicken dry with paper towels, then rub each piece lightly with a splash of olive oil. (Lightly is key — too much and the skin won’t crisp up as well.) Sprinkle liberally with salt and pepper.
Place chicken on a wire rack with a baking pan underneath to catch drips. Bake for 30 minutes or until juices run clear.
Everyone in the house enjoyed this! The Open Nature Air Chilled Chicken thighs are extremely flavorful and juicy, and we loved the crispy, crunchy skin too! It’s genuinely different than traditional chicken, and it’s both a high-quality and affordable product to serve your family.
Want to give it a try? Open Nature Air Chilled Chicken is newly available exclusively in Jewel-Osco stores. Have you seen it at yours?
