Heads-up, Jewel-Osco shoppers. You’ll want to head to JewelOsco.com and look at the new ad for your store. Why?
Alli over at Couponing For 4 spotted a huge variation in the ads this week. Some stores have a 16-page ad, and other stores have a 4-page ad!
Check it out: Here’s the ad for the Algonquin Jewel-Osco – 16 pages. And, here’s the ad for the Frankfort Jewel-Osco – 4 pages.
What’s going on? We aren’t sure (and trust me, all of your best Chicagoland Jewel bloggers have been scratching our collective heads trying to figure this one out.) I’m trying to get an official answer for you, and I’ll post more when I know more.
Rachel over at Mashup Mom has a paper copy of the ad and made a list of the stores not participating in the 16-page ad this week:
21164 S. LaGrange Rd., Frankfort.
1300 S. Milwaukee, Libertyville.

Readers from other blogs are chiming in too:
Glory @ CouponingFor4: “Went to the Arlington Heights this Sunday….what a mess! Spent an hour trying to figure out why the heck the prices didn’t match the ad. Was told that they are only doing monthly ads not weekly. Said Jewel was testing a few stores with this. They honored the ad prices after giving us the run around.”
Victoria @ MashupMom: “Well I was talking to one of my friends and her jewel on plum grove in palatine told her that it was a “fresh Market” and they will not be following the regular jewel ad and that they will not be taking coupons. They plan to folllow the everyday low price theory similar to Aldi I believe.”
MaryT @ MashupMom: “The one in Libertyville was just remodeled and is made to look alot like Mariano’s. Fresh Market sounds like the right name for describing the store. It is beautiful and has many nice new features that other Jewel’s do not have. They have their own prices, but will honor other Jewel store prices if you have another Jewel Ad to show them the price. Their store ad is like you said… only 4 pages. Prices are really great. I really like this store in Libertyville. They are still test marketing this store… if it works they will have more like this one. Mariano’s is just right across the street from this location.”
Gramma @ MashupMom: “The Elmhurst (Schiller St) Jewel just had its grand “reopening” last week. They claim their overall prices are lower than the prices in the circular, so they don’t follow it. HA! Last week, when navel oranges were 2/$5, theirs were $4.99. The crazy thing is, we live less than a mile from that Jewel, and are getting the full circular delivered to our house … with the prices they won’t honor.”

Those are the “Mariano’s” Jewels (sorry Jewel) they’ve had their own (better) pricing for a while. I’ve been going to the Schaumburg Road store for a while now. The savings are significant enough to get me to “cheat on” my favorite West Dundee Jewel.

Hi- At these fresh stores are you going to be able to use Jewel gift cards? Are you going to be able to use credit cards too? At Aldi’s you can not use credit cards. It sounds like YMMV as far as these stores accepting the 16 page Jewel ad and being able to use coupons. Thanks, Nancy

Jewel used to do this with a wrap around that was different for grand opening stores, but with people being so mobile I do not think this multi version ad is a great idea. They need to name their stores different names or give it a Jewel Plus or something to differentiate the stores. I would think with them not doing well financially this is NOT going to help. The customers being confused and frustrated by ads.

I moved to Frankfort 20 yrs. ago and even back then the at that point ‘new Jewel’was incredibly overpriced. Looks like 20 yrs. later they still figure we want to overpay.

Verified with floor manager Caroline that if you print out the ad from the Jewel in another location they will honor the price. Yay!!!
