This is good news for Walgreens shoppers! Walgreens has changed the terms of Balance Rewards to allow you to redeem as few as 1000 points ($1) in a transaction. I like this very much as I don’t like racking up large balances of points. (Yes, I know they’re worth more if you carry 40,000 points, but I find it very difficult to spend $40 or $50 in one transaction at Walgreens.)
Here’s a link to the new terms on Walgreens’ site, and here’s the part of interest:
When purchasing items and/or services at a Participating Store, Member may choose to either redeem earned Points or continue saving Points to use on a future purchase of items and/or services. If Member elects to redeem earned Points, the Points will be converted into Redemption Dollars and the value of the Redemption Dollars will be deducted from the total price of the Member’s purchase of items and/or services from a Participating Store. Earned Points are converted into Redemption Dollars in eight(8) tiers:
(1) 1,000 points = $1
(2) 2,000 points = $2
(3) 3,000 points = $3
(4) 5,000 points = $5
(5)10,000 points = $10
(6)18,000 points = $20
(7)30,000 points = $35
(8)40,000 points = $50
Thanks to Rachel over at Mashup Mom for the heads-up, and to my readers for buzzing about this in the comments and forum.

I don’t accrue them very fast, so this works for me! :)

It seems to be a mystery as to when the register will ask if you want to redeem points or not. The past 2 times I’ve shopped there, I’ve wanted to redeem some points and it doesn’t ask me. The cashiers just shrug. I have 20,000. who knows?
