May is finally here, and it’s the time of year I start planning our family’s vegetable garden! Each year, gardening is a popular topic around the blog too, with many of my readers sharing great tips and ideas each year.
Last year, one of my readers wrote about her kiddie pool garden, which she grew on an apartment deck! Great idea for the space-crunched.
I recently saw this idea at TheGardenIsland.com for a weed-free mini garden:
This gardener has set the bags on a recycled pallet, but you could also use a kiddie pool or 2x4s to raise the bags off the ground or patio. Thought it was a cool enough idea to share for those growing shallow-root vegetables and herbs!
If you like ideas like these, I am also on Pinterest sharing other ideas for “Household Magic,” recipes and more!

I have seen that idea for use around trees where you can’t really dig because of the roots.
Plant impatiens for example, put bags in a circle around the tree and cover the bags with mulch so it looks pretty.

Just make sure you stick to shallow-rooted plants because that bag doesn’t leave much room for the roots to grow. Even herbs like cilantro and parsley have an 8-inch tap root.
A better super-cheap and super-easy solution is to plant your plants in a 5-gallon bucket with some holes punched in the bottom for drainage. Most places that serve food–restaurants, bakeries, and even supermarkets–gladly give them away for free if you ask. You can also purchase them for under $5 at the big box hardware stores. This will give your plants more than enough room for their roots to grow, and they’ll pay you back with maximum yields.
