If you’re not familiar with Woodman’s, it’s a 14-store supermarket chain in Wisconsin and Illinois. Woodman’s is a “superstore” of sorts — the stores are enormous, with almost a warehouse-club type feel, although Woodman’s isn’t a club and doesn’t utilize a loyalty card.
Woodman’s website states “While large nationwide super stores carry clothing, housewares, and food products, Woodman’s is solely focused on providing the widest variety of grocery items.” And they do – they carry a vast variety of products under an everyday-low-price pricing structure. They don’t often have sales, and they don’t often offer a print ad. This makes Woodman’s an interesting place to shop from a couponer’s perspective.
I’ve long been a fan of playing the high-low pricing game, in which we can save the most by combining coupons with the lowest sale prices. It’s tougher to do that at Woodman’s as their prices don’t change much – and admittedly, I don’t shop at Woodman’s nearly as often as other stores. But this week, I took a trip to the Carpentersville, Illinois Woodman’s location after my mom gave me a heads-up on a cookie deal she spotted there. And along the way, I spotted some good prices on other items that I’ll likely continue to buy at Woodman’s in the future… as well as a few I won’t. Come along for my Woodman’s deals photo tour:
It’s cheaper to buy a 6-pack of applesauce for $2.39 than it is to pay for a game of bowling. And, if you’re really pinching pennies and just buying the applesauce FOR the bowling aspect, they also sell…
(You think I’m kidding. I’m not. :)
So, those are the things that stood out to me as things I would buy. Here are some things I’d pass on:
If you go to Woodman’s:
A few things to note. Woodman’s is huge. It’s not a place for quick in-and-out trips unless you go late at night. Expect fairly long lines and allow yourself at least an hour to cover the whole store.
Woodman’s also does not accept credit cards. You can pay with cash, check or debit card.
Woodman’s coupon policy also has some specifics to note:
– Coupons will be adjusted down in the event of an overage.
– They do not accept expired coupons or competitor coupons, and they don’t price-match.
– They accept ONE internet printable per like item per transaction. (Yes, even though you can print two like coupons, you can’t use them in the same trip.)
– Woodman’s also doesn’t accept free-product coupons without “proper anti-fraud features.” If you have a coupon that passes approval, you can use one free-item coupon per transaction per day.
I took some photos of the coupon policy and free-product coupon notice, but both were laminated in plastic and were difficult to get clear pictures of.

Looks like I may have to take a trip for the turkey meat, fish, and juicey juice!
Where did you find the coupon policy? I was told by an employee, one of the few times I have gone, that they did not stack coupons. I was in a hurry so I didn’t bother with it at the time.

Woodman’s does seem to have some great prices, but it makes me sad that the times have changed so much. Things used to be a good deal only if they were free or a money maker.

Jill, I have your DVD and learned from you to plan ahead, cut out only what you need from your inserts and head out to the store. When shopping at Woodman’s, are you bringing a binder of random coupons with you? Just curious how to get organized for a trip there.

One of my Facebook readers posted This link to Woodman’s Coupon Policy, which is different than the one I took a photo of at the register. This one says that they’ll accept THREE like printables per item per day.

The Woodmans in North Aurora has great clearance carts by both entrances, the front door and by the liqour department.I have found a bag of preemie huggies for my daughters dolls for $4, dented cans of campbells soup for 50 cents and packages of 6 whale crackers(like goldfish) for lunchboxes for 99 cents. There is also a spot for dairy clearance and I got 8 oz bags of Kraft cheese crumbles for 99 cents and Land o Lakes Sautee Express were marked at 79 cents with 55 cent coupons on them. Woodmans also has a good variety of Marcal paper products; napkins, lunch bags, individual tissue boxes and single rolls of toilet paper and paper towels. When Marcal has coupons out I mostly use them at Woodmans.

You’ll note your linked policy states that they accept store and MQ, but does not mention stacking…and it is not allowed. I always get arguments on it and they will not put it through. Also, I have always been told that they only accept one like IP per trip, and also only one FREE item Q per person per day. Maybe with it being employee owned they have differences at each location. I live in Kenosha and we do our weekly shopping at Woodman’s and Aldi. I used to be a super-couponer but now without Jewel and Dominicks I have mostly given up. I clip coupons for what I regularly buy and just basically get it all at Woodman’s unless I see a deal at Pick n Save or my local family-owned Supervalu. Prices at Woodman’s are great in my opinion, on most items. We buy Silk weekly and it is over $1 less than the other grocery stores here ($2.69). Anyway, I use self checkout all the time, never a live person. All my coupons, even free items, scan without issue and no one checks them, so I have an easier time of things. They also now have free wifi which is a nice convenience. It would be nice to have a sales flyer, but instead we just stock up when we see a regular item of ours on sale, for example Annie’s bunnies are quite often 2/$4

except I don’t always have the time to go there.
Daughter doesn’t like going because it takes so long so I just drop her off next door at the Good Will with her friends and they can go shopping there while I’m at Woodmans.
I especially go when I know there are a number of good coupons I haven’t found any sales for that will expire shortly (i.e, 12/31/12) for things I know I will need or will be using. Picked up butter and many items for the number of cookies I bake. Or when we decide to do “cupcake wars” in our kitchen during sleepovers.
I have a list of items some friends and family members want but can’t find anywhere else but they are at Woodman’s.
And you will never see such a large selection of dairy products in your life! It’s always a fun adventure to shop there.
Their 24/7 hours are great as I usually go real early on the way to work and no lines.
