Deals of the Week for August 1, 2011 (Chicagoland)

Being that we’ve got several Procter & Gamble deals at Jewel, Hilander, Target and Walgreens that overlap with this week’s sales AND P&G coupons expiring today, I wanted to get this week’s Deals up a day early for you so that you’d have time to take advantage of them. If you bought the Jewel Groupon ice cream deal ($15 worth of selected ice creams for $9) you could use it here. Buy 6 Klondike or Popsicles ($2.99 each before instant savings.) Get $5 in instant savings, making these $2.49 each. That’s $12.94 after savings… but you paid $9 for the Groupon. So, 6 treats for $9 works out to $1.50 each.

I’m not sure that this is the BEST deal to use that Groupon on, but if it’s burning a hole in your pocket, that’s one possible scenario.

The ad shows logos for Olay, Gillette, Metamucil and Prilosec products as being included as well, though there is no list of them. I’m not seeing anything particularly stellar here.

DEAL IDEAS: A 14-can Pringles Deal could be decent if you’re a multiple-insert-getter. With 7 $1-off-2 coupons, pay $14 and get a $5 Catalina. $9 for 14 cans is about .64 per can.

Tide lovers with two 7/17 inserts can buy two powder Tides for $17.98 after two $2 coupons and get $5 back. Two for $12.98 is $6.49 each.

The Crest Catalina (Buy $6 worth of Crest, get $2) overlaps with this too. If you do a deal involving three tubes of Crest, use three .75 coupons, plus an Avenu ecoupon if you’ve got one, and get an extra $2 Catalina for the Crest too.

This is also true for most produce. Seafood, by its nature, is more expensive per pound, but a good “buy” benchmark is $4 per pound or less.)

Are you a Meijer Mperks member? Mperks is a different set of electronic Meijer coupons. They’re attached to your cellphone number, but aside from one text message to activate your account, you do not need to use text messaging to continually use them. Once you register with Meijer Mperks, you log into the Mperks website and click the electronic coupons you’d like to load to your account. Then, when you’re at the checkout, type your cellphone number into the keypad at the register, and your coupons come off automatically.

DEAL IDEA: If you have the Que Rica Vida book (it’s General Mills’ free Spanish coupon mailer that comes out throughout the year – subscribe free at QueRicaVida.com) your best bet is to buy one Honey Nut Cheerios, one Cinnamon Toast Crunch, and then any other two items of your choice.

To do an all-cereal deal, use either the .50 ecoupon or the $1-off-2 for your remaining boxes.

After coupons, you’ll pay $8.36 for 4 boxes of cereal and 2 gallons of milk. The milk was $3.89/gallon when I shopped (Cherry Valley location) so, if you would be buying two gallons anyway, the milk alone would be $7.78. For .58 more, you’re getting four boxes of cereal – that’s about .15 a box!

Or, do two cereals, one Golden Grahams bars and one Nature Valley Granola thins. Use the $1 coupons noted above for the cereal, the .50 bars coupon (which will double to $1) and the .75 Granola Thins coupon (pre-coupon, $11.76.) After coupons, you’ll pay $8.01 for everything. With $7.78 for the milk, that’s just .23 for the cereal, bars and thins!

Hilander/Kroger meat deals:

• Tyson whole chickens are .89/lb.
• Pork spareribs are $1.47/lb.
• Tyson boneless, skinless chicken breasts or thighs are $1.97/lb.

Hilander/Kroger seafood deals:

• Kroger Tilapia or flounder fillets (12oz.) are $3.49.
• 20oz. packages of Kroger breaded shrimp are $3.99

Hilander/Kroger produce deals:

• Fresh green beans are .89/lb.
• Red, white or golden potatoes are .89/lb.
• 5lb. Clementines are $5.99 – that’s about $1.20/lb. (3lb. bags are $3.77, about $1.26/lb.)

The Buy One, Get One Free coupons are going to be the best things to work in here, but you’ll need to do it today (Sunday) as they’re expiring.

For an all-Old-Spice deal, buy two deodorants ($3.99 each) and two body washes ($5.49 each.) Use the $1-off-2 coupon on the two deodorants and two “Buy deodorant, get body wash free” coupons on the body washes. After all coupons, you’ll pay $6.98 for all four… and get a $5 gift card back. That’s $1.98 for four, or about .50 each!

For an all-Head-and-Shoulders deal, buy four bottles ($7.29 each.) Use either two .50 coupons or the $1-off-2 on your first two bottles and two Buy One Get One Free coupons on the other bottles. After all coupons, pay $13.58 and get a $5 gift card back. That’s $8.58 for four, or about $2.15 each.

Target has a sale running this week on Hanes socks and underwear. Buy any 4 packs and get a $5 Target gift card. Prices are in the ad and range from $4-10, so the best way to do this deal is to buy the least expensive items. Hanes boys and girls’ kids socks are $4 per 6-pack. (Boys crew t-shirts and girls briefs are $5.50 in the ad – the next least-expensive item.)

Target.com has a printable coupon for $1 off Hanes. If you buy four $4 packages and use one $1 coupon, pay $15 and get a $5 gift card back. $10 for four is $2.50 each!

Coupon books to look for at Walgreens: Walgreens Infant Care (has a $2 coupon inside for Walgreens brand diapers, which often go on sale. All expire 12/2011.)

Here’s a super-cheap Cottonelle toilet paper deal that you’ve got to do today, Sunday, 7/31! 12-roll packages of Cottonelle are on sale for $5. The new August store coupon book (available on wire racks in front of the store) has a $1 store coupon in it that will make this $4. But it gets better… the national Catalina deal on Cottonelle continues through 7/31 ONLY. Buy two Cottonelle 12-packs and get a $3.50 Catalina.

Still following? The 7/17 SS has a .75 manufacturer coupon to stack here. So let’s put it all together… buy two Cottonelle 12-packs ($10.) The Walgreens store coupon will automatically take $1 off each package (now $8.) Use two .75 coupons, pay $6.50 and get $3.50 back. Policies to know:

• Walmart will price match any competitor’s advertised price. Bring the other store’s flyers with you to the store.
   
• With the new coupon policy, Walmart will also accept other store’s STORE coupons with an actual price listed on them. For example, a Dominick’s store coupon advertising “.99 Ragu Pasta Sauce” would be accepted. A Walgreens store coupon advertising “2/$1 Morton’s Salt” would be accepted. (A Target store coupon for “$2.50 off Huggies” would not, because it does not show the actual selling price of the item.)
   
• With the new coupon policy, Walmart will also accept competitor’s Catalina manufacturer coupons. You can get a Catalina for $1 off Snuggle and use it at Walmart.
   
• Walmart’s new coupon policy specifically addresses coupon overage. It says “Coupons may exceed the price of the item. Change may be given or applied toward the cost of the basket purchase.”
   

I would print a copy and carry a copy of the coupon policy with you if you anticipate any issues.
