“Deals of the Week” is written assuming you are using the inserts from the Chicago Tribune (or, if reading from outside Chicagoland, the largest newspaper serving your market area. That largest paper has the most, highest-value coupons. The content, coupons, and dollar amounts of the coupons in the RedPlum and SmartSource inserts differs by paper, so to coupon effectively, you do need to be getting the paper with the “best,” highest-value coupons.)

Each week I’ll blog the best deals on school supplies too. Note that as we get closer to school starting, we’re likely to see even cheaper deals on some of these — in past years, many stores have had 1-cent and 5-cent sales. And, keep in mind that the WORST thing to do is buy your entire child’s list at one store. Going in for 1-cent pencils and paying full price for everything else makes no sense. Keep the list with you and as you’re around town each week, buy only what is cheap. By the time school starts, you’ll have the list nearly completed… on the cheap! More tips here.

If you bought the Jewel Groupon ice cream deal ($15 worth of selected ice creams for $9) you could use it here. Buy 6 Klondike or Popsicles ($2.99 each before instant savings.) I’m not sure that this is the BEST deal to use that Groupon on, but if it’s burning a hole in your pocket, that’s one possible scenario.
“Spend $20, Save $5” Procter & Gamble Catalina at Jewel Buying $20 worth of the following items will generate a $5 Catalina. The ad shows logos for Olay, Gillette, Metamucil and Prilosec products as being included as well, though there is no list of them. I’m not seeing anything particularly stellar here.

(Anytime meat is under $2 a pound (no matter what it is — beef, pork, poultry) it’s a buy in my book, because $2 is a cycle low and a good benchmark for meat prices. This is also true for most produce. Seafood, by its nature, is more expensive per pound, but a good “buy” benchmark is $4 per pound or less.)
Let’s go to Dominick’s… View weekly ad | a href=”https://www.dominicks.com”>Load Dominick’s Just For U ecoupons
Note to Safeway shoppers reading from outside Chicagoland: In Chicago, Dominick’s does not double coupons (as other Safeway stores do) – if your store doubles, you’ll do even better with many of these deals. Also, in Chicago, support for previously-available ecoupons (Cellfire, ShortCuts and PGEsaver) have been discontinued. Ecoupons are now available in the “Just For U / Coupon Center” section of electronic coupons available at Dominicks.com.
Dominick’s is also offering Deal Match, where you can load price-matching offers from Jewel and Target to your Fresh Values Card. Try it at www.Dominicks.com.
Dominick’s Super Coupons:
These are store coupons found in the weekly Dominick’s flyer, which (in the case of the name-brand products) means they can be stacked with manufacturer coupons for even bigger savings. They’re attached to your cellphone number, but aside from one text message to activate your account, you do not need to use text messaging to continually use them. Once you register with Meijer Mperks, you log into the Mperks website and click the electronic coupons you’d like to load to your account. Then, when you’re at the checkout, type your cellphone number into the keypad at the register, and your coupons come off automatically.

Note that Meijers in other states are on different schedules. The Illinois Meijers are about a week behind on the sales vs. most of Indiana/Michigan. If you’re in Illinois, these Meijer deals run through Wednesday. If you’re reading from another state, they ENDED Saturday at your store… Confusing? Yes.
AND, if you shop at the Illinois NILES or ORLAND Meijer locations, they typically haven’t been following the same sale flyer as the other Illinois Meijers.

Attention Rockford, Illinois shoppers… I shopped most of this week’s deals at Hilander with Rockford’s Fox 39 this week! The coupon shopping segment is scheduled to air later this week – more details soon…
IF YOU’RE READING THIS ON SUNDAY, 7/31: Do these deals quick, as the coupons expire today!
Oral-B Indicator toothbrushes are on sale for $1. Buy two and use the $2-off-2 coupon from 7/3 PG. You’ll pay NOTHING and get TWO FREE!
Crest toothpaste (6.4oz.) is on sale for $1. Use the .50 coupon from 7/31 PG, which doubles to $1 and pay NOTHING! It’s free! Use the .75 coupon in the same 7/31 PG insert and pick up more for .25 a tube. (Or, if you’re reading this on Sunday, you could also use the .75 coupon from 7/3 PG OR 6/5 PG and pay .25 as well – these coupons expire 7/31 though.)
The Crest Catalina continues this week too, and it’s especially fun to do at Hilander, because it’s ringing with a price spread and apparently is figured on a $6 regular-price purchase threshold. I bought 4 tubes ($4) and used four .75 coupons. I paid $1 for four tubes but got a $2 Catalina, making those four tubes all FREE and moneymakers. With two .50 coupons (doubled to $1) and two .75 coupons, you’d pay .50 for FOUR tubes and get a $2 Catalina back!
Ivory 3-bar or Safeguard 2-bar soap is on sale for $1. Buy it and use the .50 coupon from 7/31 PG, which doubles to $1, and it’s FREE!
(If you’re reading this on Sunday, the 7/3 PG also has a .50 coupon, but it expires 7/31! Go today for more FREE soap! Hilander’s Softcoin ecoupons also have a .50 ecoupon that would net you more soap at .50 per package.)
Dawn dish soap is on sale for $1. Use the .50 coupon from 7/31 PG, which doubles to $1, and it’s FREE!

Purina Beggin’ Strips dog treats are on sale for $3.99, Buy One Get One Free. Use the B1G1F coupon from 5/8 SS and pay NOTHING! They’re FREE!
Wonderful Pistachios (8oz. bags) are on sale for $2.99. Buy two and use the $1-off-2 coupon from 6/26 SS. After coupon, you’ll pay $4.98 for two, or $2.49 each. (Or, if you’re like me and shop at both Hilander and Jewel-Osco on occasion, you may have $1 manufacturer coupons for Wonderful Pistachios from the 3/21 Spotlight (Jewel in-store magazine.) If you do, you’ll grab these for just $1.99 per bag!

To do an all-cereal deal, use either the .50 ecoupon or the $1-off-2 for your remaining boxes.
After coupons, you’ll pay $8.36 for 4 boxes of cereal and 2 gallons of milk. The milk was $3.89/gallon when I shopped (Cherry Valley location) so, if you would be buying two gallons anyway, the milk alone would be $7.78. For .58 more, you’re getting four boxes of cereal – that’s about .15 a box!
Or, do two cereals, one Golden Grahams bars and one Nature Valley Granola thins. Use the $1 coupons noted above for the cereal, the .50 bars coupon (which will double to $1) and the .75 Granola Thins coupon (pre-coupon, $11.76.) After coupons, you’ll pay $8.01 for everything. With $7.78 for the milk, that’s just .23 for the cereal, bars and thins!

Readers outside Illinois will want to check with their local Kroger or Kroger-affiliated stores to determine how they handle coupon doubling.

CVS is again running a gas card promotion. Spend $30 on selected items in the ad and get a $10 gas card. You do NOT have to purchase all $30 in the same shopping trip, but you DO have to purchase $30 worth in this particular calendar week — it will not carry over to next week. Your CVS Extra Care Card will track the $30 for you.
CVS Tip: Remember to always scan your CVS card at the Coupon Center scanner in the store — it prints bonus coupons for you!

Wrapping things up with Walmart…
Coupon books to look for at Walmart: “Bright Ideas, Delicious Cereals“ (Kellogg’s cereal and breakfast coupons)
Policies to know:
- Walmart will price match any competitor’s advertised price. Bring the other store’s flyers with you to the store.
- With the new coupon policy, Walmart will also accept other store’s STORE coupons with an actual price listed on them. For example, a Dominick’s store coupon advertising “.99 Ragu Pasta Sauce” would be accepted. A Walgreens store coupon advertising “2/$1 Morton’s Salt” would be accepted. (A Target store coupon for “$2.50 off Huggies” would not, because it does not show the actual selling price of the item.)
- With the new coupon policy, Walmart will also accept competitor’s Catalina manufacturer coupons. You can get a Catalina for $1 off Snuggle and use it at Walmart.
- Walmart’s new coupon policy specifically addresses coupon overage. It says “Coupons may exceed the price of the item. Change may be given or applied toward the cost of the basket purchase.”
I would print a copy and carry a copy of the coupon policy with you if you anticipate any issues.
Will I blog Walmart in its entirety each week?
I will not be blogging entire writeups for Walmart each week. Every store location’s regular prices are different, and Walmart does not issue a weekly ad every week. I’ve listed Walmart at the end of each week’s Deals writeup, because if you see any deals above that you want, you’ll likely also be able to do them at Walmart.
However, if there IS an ad with noteworthy sales or I’m aware of great coupon matchups, you’ll find those here too.

As always, these deals are guidelines for shopping. I can make no guarantee that these items will be on sale, in stock, or available at your area store. I can also not guarantee your Catalinas will print, your cashier will smile at you while you check out, or that your shopping cart won’t have a broken wheel. But I CAN teach you how to save money :)
And, also, as always, a huge thanks to the many readers who posted and emailed deals that made it into today’s Deals of the Week! We’re all in this together, and I sincerely appreciate everyone who spots and passes along good deals that we can all enjoy :) Thank you… to YOU!
* All You magazine: If you like coupons, you will probably really enjoy it. It’s an inexpensive magazine ($2.49 an issue) that is absolutely filled with coupons each month — typically $50-$100 worth per issue! Subscribing via the pink banner on the right drops the price to $1.67 per issue. Depending on the values, if you use 2 or 3 coupons alone from each issue, you’ve recouped the cost of the magazine, and you’re on your way to even bigger savings.)

I am at my wit’s end. No Trib coupons and the ones in my local paper and slim and mostly restaurant and Blair, etc. Why are the well to do suburbs getting inserts and the poorer communities (lower middle class) not? How can we save money with no coupons? The online ones only print once in a while. We can’t buy them from ebay so what do we do now?
savin up says
thanks Jill for the extra early post for this week and thanks for all you have taught us to do!!

20 miles maybe but more than that and it’s too costly gas-wise. How do I find out what area has all the coupons? It could be hit or miss with a paper box.
stringofpearls says
Target’s Hane’s deal- 4 packs of $4 hanes is $16, not $19. So then $16 minus the $1 coupon brings it to $15. Minus the $5 you’re getting back, so that’s $10 for 4 packs, or $2.50 each. Right?
cathy705 says
I see in the intro paragragh, but not in the Wags deals. Crayola Markers,8ct original colors washable, are in ad for $2 with $2 RR.

Third week in a row that I failed to receive an RP in my Tribune. I live in IN. Is that why? Any help would be appreciated. I may need to start getting my paper some method other than delivery. The only reason I get the paper is the coupons. :(

I live in crown pt IN and I subscribe to the Tribune and the first 2 weeks I recieved a RP insert although the last 2 weeks none I get the run around at the tribune that its a zip code thing if that was the case then why did I get them the first 2 weeks I think it is the carriers!!

Email above and don’t hold back :) I actually got a redelivery today (with coupons and ads) after I emailed back and forth and said cancel my trib and refund me. I also said I was going to contact the BBB. I have never got a Sunday paper delivered “within an hour” like they say you will till today. I am supposedly getting a call from a supervisor in the next 24 to 48 hours. Have to wait and see but the Chicago Tribune is really ruining my Sundays!
Anyone near Bradley/Bourbonnais that knows of a place to buy the Trib with coupons? That’s as far as I will drive for them. Thanks!

Thx for the early post!!! With your info I was able to make a killing at Walgreens! Didn’t have the .75c Q from the 7/17 but with the printable you linked was still able to get the Cottonelle for .18c a roll after tax!!! Turned around and used that $3.50 RR on the Kellogg’s deal. Used the $1/2 Frosted Mini Wheats from the 7/24 RP and found a $1/2 Raisin Bran printable currently on their site to score those boxes for under a $1! (if anyone buys the Raisin Bran make sure the get the Crunch version, original is part of the deal but the box has fewer ounces than the Crunch so you’ll be getter more food for your buck).

Don’t bother. I checked my Wags in Cary; they were all out. Cashier said they were gone 20 minutes after they opened. One woman purchased almost all of them. Thank you so much ma’am for clearing the shelves. Please remember that some of us buy them because we actually have children that need them for school.
soapboxtray says
For getting these up early! It was a nice surprise!!! I think the Wags Oral B toothbrushes will actually be $1. or 50¢ each after rewards? I didn’t look at the coupon however. OK… going to clip some coupons! Cheers!
There is an Office Max deal for Expo markers if your store has the $5. off store Q. I am going to try it when I run out and let you know. It is posted under recent posts/office max. Worse case under $6. for 4 multi-packs but could be $1. for 4 if they accept 2 Qs.

Last week I did the huggies wipe deal, which required a coupon from the july booklet, as well as a manufacturer coupon. Both coupons would not ring, and the manager came up to the register and said that the coupons in the july booklet are manufacturer coupons. I told her they aren’t, and she tried showing me where it DOES say manufacturer on it, but has no redemption address. I stood my ground and told her if she didn’t honor both types of coupons I would go somewhere else. My friend called me today and told me the same thing happened to her with the cottonelle deal! What is up? Anyone else have this issue? I am a former walgreens employee so I know that we don’t get any credit for using in store coupons, just real manufacturer coupons.

Does the Buy 20, Save 5 PG Catalina work like the “black belt” deals? As in, do you really have to buy 20, or can it be lower to generate the 5.
jen120976 says
Maybe I’m blind, but I’m not seeing the $1 off 2 NutriGrain Q in the 7/24 RP. I see pop tarts, mini wheats, other Kel. cereals, and Keebler crackers. Could this be regional, or am I not looking in the right spot? TIA
soapboxtray says
If you still have those Coke coupon books that were at Jewel and others a while back there is $1. off 2 Man.Qs in there for Keebler/Sunshine products.

If you buy the Allegra 5 ct 24 hour for $6.99 you get $6.99 mail in rebate making it FREE I also used a $2.00 off manufacture’s coupon.
Was I supposed to get the mail in rebate form from the cashier?
Thanks!
mrsemerson says
I had done the cottonelle deal and I had two 75 cents off coupon. The cashier took the store one first then the other coupon beeped, but she took one 75 cent coupon off (along w the $2 store q). She said that the store coupon says it is a manufacturer’s coupon only good at Walgreens. It actually says that on the coupon. Should they be using the coupon as a store coupon? Also, maybe it would have helped if I had given the 75 cent off coupons first.
BTW thanks for posting early!

For the Head & Shoulders deal at Wags . . .
**For a Head and Shoulders deal: Buy two. Use the Buy One Get One Free coupon from 7/3 PG (expires TODAY, 7/31!) Pay $4 and get $2 back, making these two for $2, or $1 each.**
Could I also use the $0.50/1 in the 7.31 PG to bring it down to $0.75 each? The BOGO coupon attaches to the one that you are getting free and the $0.50/1 attaches to the one you are buying (or whichever way it works)?
Forgive me . . just got back from vacation about 2 hours ago in which we drove for 8+ hours with our two kids (ages 5 and 1.5). I’m fried so this may be totally wrong.
Help! :)
linzer001 says
At my Wags the Head and Shoulders were ringing up at $5.99 and the other one was ringing up at $2.01, rather than $4 each, so when my awesome cashier took my B1G1 she took off the $5.99 price since it was the first one rung up, so then after the $2 RR, I got 2 bottles of Head and Shoulders for 1 penny!!! I was super excited!!

If you want Eggos but don’t have the $.75 off Qs that Jill mentioned from Wal-Mart, there is a $1/3 boxes Q at the same link she listed under the Keebler cracker deal for Walgreens. When I went to that link, I was offered 3 coupons, one of which was for Morningstar and/or Eggos, in addition to the Keebler. Not as good of a deal as the .75 Q, but if you wanted to buy them anyway, like me and didn’t have it….

Went to Kroger for the cereal/milk deal & they had the individual boxes of Kleenex tissues for $0.49! They had both the small square boxes & the bigger rectangle boxes. I had 2 $0.50/3boxes coupons from the paper (sorry I don’t remember which one!). My store only doubles 2 identical coupons. So I got 6 boxes of 120 count Kleenex plus lotion tissues for $1.17!! My receipt said I save over $10 JUST on the kleenex using my card ($12 with the coupons). My store was out of the dawn, ivory/safeguard & crest. I am in Central IL…not sure if all the stores have them on sale. Kroger is the 1 ad I never get.

Just wanted to know if this would be a good deal and if u can do it. Wags has the Wet Jet starter kit for $18.99 and u get a refill free. 7/31 P&G has a coupon for $5 off and in the Home made simple book there’s another coupon for a free refill when u buy the kit. So it would be $13.99 for the kit and 2 refills.
