Hello, Super-Couponers! As you read this, I’m en route to beautiful Chicagoland from sunny San Diego, where I’ve spent the last few days at the 2011 BlogHer conference.
It’s time for Chicagoland’s Deals of the Week once again. I’ve got all the best supermarket and drugstore deals of the week written just for you… all in one place, on one page! As always, grab your scissors and coupon inserts, and get ready to start clipping this week, as bunches of bargains and freebies are heading your way! And, each week I’ll also continue blogging the best school supply deals until the kids go back to school…
This week’s newspaper contained three coupon inserts: SmartSource (SS,) RedPlum (RP,) and General Mills (GM.) The Parade magazine also has some FREE coupons for Mango Pineapple Smoothies and Caramel Lattes at McDonald’s.
To our NEW blog readers: If you’re interested in learning to save on almost everything you buy at the grocery store, why not attend a live Super-Couponing workshop? Many are FREE, and you’ll learn how to cut your grocery bill 50-70%! You can also learn at home with my Super-Couponing DVD workshop… and in about one hour, you’ll be saving with coupons like a pro! Learn more!
Now… ready for your Deals of the Week? You may enjoy another weekly breakout of school supply deals (this week, FREE 24ct. Crayola crayons, .09 highlighters, .19 rulers, .29 Elmer’s School Glue,) a $10-off-$50 coupon that overlaps with a $5-off-$15 frozen food coupon at Dominick’s, .07 Beech-Nut baby food jars, final week of Meijer’s “Spend $10 on Kellogg’s, get $10 off Fruit of the Loom” which may overlap with their “Spend $40 on kids’ apparel, get $10 instant savings,” 40-load Tide for $2.99, .50 Bar-S bologna or franks, .57 kids’ Nexcare bandages, FREE Keri lotion, FREE Listerine SmartRinse, .25 Colgate Total toothpaste, .50 Dove hair care products… so, let’s get started!

A note to my non-Midwest readers: While my weekly deals focus on Illinois stores, the Target, Walgreens and CVS deals apply nationally. And, if you’re shopping at a SuperValu, Safeway, or Kroger store, you may find similar sales to our Jewel, Dominick’s, and Hilander deals. Welcome, and enjoy!

and the drugstore/general merchandise store deals run through Saturday.
Current home-delivery subscription deals on the Chicago Tribune: Code OCNP: .38/week Sunday Delivery. Code X277 or X542: .50/week Sunday Delivery or $1/week W, TH, F, Sun delivery. Call 800-311-8500 or visit www.chicagotribune.com.
“Deals of the Week” is written assuming you are using the inserts from the Chicago Tribune (or, if reading from outside Chicagoland, the largest newspaper serving your market area. That largest paper has the most, highest-value coupons. The content, coupons, and dollar amounts of the coupons in the RedPlum and SmartSource inserts differs by paper, so to coupon effectively, you do need to be getting the paper with the “best,” highest-value coupons.)

Each week I’ll blog the best deals on school supplies too. Note that as we get closer to school starting, we’re likely to see even cheaper deals on some of these — in past years, many stores have had 1-cent and 5-cent sales. And, keep in mind that the WORST thing to do is buy your entire child’s list at one store. Going in for 1-cent pencils and paying full price for everything else makes no sense. Keep the list with you and as you’re around town each week, buy only what is cheap. By the time school starts, you’ll have the list nearly completed… on the cheap! More tips here.

(Anytime meat is under $2 a pound (no matter what it is — beef, pork, poultry) it’s a buy in my book, because $2 is a cycle low and a good benchmark for meat prices. This is also true for most produce. Seafood, by its nature, is more expensive per pound, but a good “buy” benchmark is $4 per pound or less.)

Ragu pasta sauce (16-24oz.) is on sale for $1.50 a jar. Buy two and use the $1-off-2 from the 7/31 RPU. You’ll pay $2 for two, or $1 each.
Wishbone salad dressing (16oz.) is $1.50 per bottle. Buy two and use the $1-off-2 from the 7/31 RPU. You’ll pay $2 for two, or $1 each.
Skippy peanut butter (15-16.3oz.) is on sale for $1.67 a jar (3-for-$5.) Buy two and use the $1-off-2 from the 7/31 RPU or a printable. You’ll pay $2.34 for two, or $1.17 each.
Baby food deal! Beech-Nut Stage 2 (4oz.) baby foods and Beech-Nut Stage 1 Fruits or Vegetables (2.5oz.) baby foods are all on sale for .40 a jar. There are a few printable coupons out that you’ll want to print for this deal: $1-off-3 | $1-off-16.
With the first printable, buy 3. After coupon, pay .20 for THREE jars, or about .07 per jar. With the second, buying 16 with this coupon will knock it to about .34 per jar.
As an aside, a lot of people email asking how to save on baby food. Even with the occasional coupon deal, baby food is some of the most expensive food you will ever buy, ounce per ounce. When my children were babies, I made 95% of their “baby food” with a $10 mini food processor at home… it’s very easy to whip and puree fruits and vegetables right when you need them versus jar feeding. But, when I would hit super-cheap deals like this, I’d buy some jars to have on hand for nights we’d eat out or away from home.
Another baby food tip… when I did buy jarred baby food, I never bough pureed bananas or apples. Fresh bananas are super-easy to mash in a bowl with the back of a spoon. I would buy large jars of natural applesauce with no added sweeteners and feed that instead — again, ounce per ounce, these are two of the cheapest “baby foods” to make at home. I’d save my jar purchases for mixed fruits and berries or other varieties/flavors that weren’t as easy to make. And this has been your “saving on baby food” tip of the day!
Here’s a Catalina sale on Charmin, Bounty or Tide. Buy $20 or more in these products and get a $5 Catalina. Here are your products and matchups:
Bounty Basic 6-roll paper towels – $5.99
– .25 off – 7/31 PG
Charmin Basic 12-roll Bath Tissue – $5.99
– .25 off – 7/31 PG
Tide Liquid Laundry Detergent (100oz.) – $11.97
– $1 off – 7/31 PG
If you’re doing this deal, you may want to look for smaller packages of Bounty, Charmin or Tide in the store, as only these three are shown in the ad, but from the ad wording, all Bounty, Charmin or Tide should be included. For example, three Charmin or Bounty Basic packs puts you at $17.97 – it may be worth throwing in a single roll of regular Bounty paper towels (around $2.19.)This would put you at $20.16 – use four .25 coupons, pay $19.16 and get $5 back.
“Okay” laundry detergent deal: 113-ounce Gain Powder Laundry Detergent is $9.99. Use the $2 coupon from 7/17 SS and pay $7.99.
Meijer’s running an instant-savings sale on clothing this week too… buy $40 or more in kids’ apparel, get $10 off instantly. Note that clearance and “Everyday Best Price” items are not included.
I’m wondering if you could overlap this with the Kellogg’s deal too if $10 of your free Fruit of the Loom apparel was children’s underwear and socks — then you’d only need to buy another $30 worth of kids’ clothes to get the $10 instant savings. Multi-stack it!
Deals continuing from previous weeks:
Meijer’s having a Buy $10 Kellogg’s, get $10 off 3 packages of Fruit of the Loom Basics instant-savings sale through 8/10/11! You must buy the Fruit of the Loom items in the same transaction as the Kellogg’s. The ad shows Men’s, Women’s, Boys’ and Girls’ Froot of the Loom Basics socks, t-shirts and underwear ranging in price from $3.99-$13.49.
ALL Kellogg’s, Keebler, Sunshine and Eggo products are included, ANY size or flavor. Prices and products were gathered at the Algonquin Meijer. I and other readers have been finding coupon books at Walmart lately! We know of two Kellogg’s coupon books you may find in stores – “Bright Ideas, Delicious Cereals” and “Happy New School Year”. If you have either of these, I’ve included matchups for these coupons as well.

Are you a Meijer Mperks member? Mperks is a different set of electronic Meijer coupons. They’re attached to your cellphone number, but aside from one text message to activate your account, you do not need to use text messaging to continually use them. Once you register with Meijer Mperks, you log into the Mperks website and click the electronic coupons you’d like to load to your account. Then, when you’re at the checkout, type your cellphone number into the keypad at the register, and your coupons come off automatically.

Note that Meijers in other states are on different schedules. The Illinois Meijers are about a week behind on the sales vs. most of Indiana/Michigan. If you’re in Illinois, these Meijer deals run through Wednesday. If you’re reading from another state, they ENDED Saturday at your store… Confusing? Yes.
AND, if you shop at the Illinois NILES or ORLAND Meijer locations, they typically haven’t been following the same sale flyer as the other Illinois Meijers.

Off to Target…
View weekly ad | Print store coupons from Target.com …
If you did not receive the Target “Back to School” coupon mailer a couple of weeks ago in the mail, Target put some of those great store coupons online on their site this week.
If you need adhesive bandages, print the .75 coupon for NexCare from the link (or clip it from the mailer.) NexCare kids’ bandages are $1.87 a box. Stack that .75 coupon with the .55 coupon from the 4/3 SS. After coupons, you’ll pay .57! Not free, but not bad.
Check out the clothing coupons too that they’ve added to their site too. There’s a $3 off Denim Jeans coupon there, and several readers have reported finding jeans for $4.98 on clearance again (remember that sale back in March?) With coupon, you’re looking at $1.98! There are also coupons for 20% off two kids denim, and 20% off Shaun White clothing.
“No Coupon Needed” Deals:
Target Notes:
Target has launched mobile Target coupons which you can load to your phone. They are Target store coupons that you can stack manufacturer coupons with. Load coupons here. You can also print these offers by going to www.target.com/save and entering your phone number.
Remember too that you get .05 off your total at Target for each reusable bag you bring and use. If you pay with the Target credit card, you receive another 5% off.

This deal become even more fun if you have the Walgreens Infant Care coupon books (started showing up in stores in early 2011.) There’s a $2 store coupon for the big Huggies wipes in this book too! The coupons DO have different bar codes, but I’m not sure if they will both scan (usually Wags will take two store coupons on the same item, as long as the dollar values are different. With these being the same… not sure what will happen!) But, if you’ve got both, use that one here too. If it all comes together, you’ll pay $1.49 for the BIG pack!
…
Another Huggies deal?
Huggies Slip-On Diapers (like pull-ups, sort of?) are $9.99 per jumbo pack. Buy one and get $2 in Register Rewards! Use the $1.50 coupon from 7/17 SS. You’ll pay $8.49 and get $2 back, making these $6.49.
Here’s a weird little deal… if it works! I’ve confessed before to my affinity for Carmex lip balm. This week’s Wags ad has a Buy One Get One Free store coupon for Carmex. But there’s ANOTHER Carmex coupon on page 15 for .99 Carmex!
If both of these scan correctly in the same transaction, buy two Carmex. You -should- pay .99 for two, or about .50 each.

The 7/17 SS has a coupon for $1 off any Revlon, and the 7/31 SS has a $1-off-2 Revlon Colorsilk.

Man, CVS has a lot going on this week! There’s a “Spend $15, Save $5” on John Frieda, but the coupons available, along with the prices of the items, don’t make that deal too hot.
This one’s not bad though… it’s a “Spend $25 on Huggies, get $5 in ECBs”. Here are your products and matchups:
Huggies Snug & Dry Big Pack or Little Movers big box diapers – $20
– $3 off – 7/17 SS
– $1.50 off – 7/17 SS
Huggies Mega Pack Wipes (184-216ct.) – $6
– .50 off – 7/17 SS
DEAL IDEA: Easiest deal? Buy one box of diapers and one wipes ($26.) Use the $3 diaper coupon and the .50 wipes coupon. Pay $22.50 and get $5 back. That knocks everything down to $17.50.
Wrapping things up, this week’s ad is advising us to visit the coupon center for a “mystery beauty coupon.” The ad shows a couple of deals that the mystery coupon could be worked into to make even better. Scan your CVS card at the coupon center, get your coupon, and see if it works well into one of the following…
CoverGirl Lashblast, Lash Perfection, Lip Perfection, Liquilineblast Intense or Smoky Shadowblast – $7.
– Buy two and get $4 back in ECBs. The 7/31 PG has a $1 off CoverGirl coupon. If you have two, buy two items ($14.) After coupons, pay $12 and get $4 back. That’s $8 for two, or $4 each… PLUS whatever your mystery bonus savings is.
Aussie or Herbal Essences shampoo, conditioner or styler – 2 for $4.97
– Buy two and get $1 back in ECBs. That’s about $1.99 each – not a super deal, but if your mystery bonus is good, it could become a better buy.
CVS is again running a gas card promotion. Spend $30 on selected items in the ad and get a $10 gas card. You do NOT have to purchase all $30 in the same shopping trip, but you DO have to purchase $30 worth in this particular calendar week — it will not carry over to next week. Your CVS Extra Care Card will track the $30 for you.
CVS Tip: Remember to always scan your CVS card at the Coupon Center scanner in the store — it prints bonus coupons for you!

Wrapping things up with Walmart…
Coupon books to look for at Walmart: “Bright Ideas, Delicious Cereals“ (Kellogg’s cereal and breakfast coupons)
Policies to know:
- Walmart will price match any competitor’s advertised price. Bring the other store’s flyers with you to the store.
- With the new coupon policy, Walmart will also accept other store’s STORE coupons with an actual price listed on them. For example, a Dominick’s store coupon advertising “.99 Ragu Pasta Sauce” would be accepted. A Walgreens store coupon advertising “2/$1 Morton’s Salt” would be accepted. (A Target store coupon for “$2.50 off Huggies” would not, because it does not show the actual selling price of the item.)
- With the new coupon policy, Walmart will also accept competitor’s Catalina manufacturer coupons. You can get a Catalina for $1 off Snuggle and use it at Walmart.
- Walmart’s new coupon policy specifically addresses coupon overage. It says “Coupons may exceed the price of the item. Change may be given or applied toward the cost of the basket purchase.”
I would print a copy and carry a copy of the coupon policy with you if you anticipate any issues.
Will I blog Walmart in its entirety each week?
I will not be blogging entire writeups for Walmart each week. Every store location’s regular prices are different, and Walmart does not issue a weekly ad every week. I’ve listed Walmart at the end of each week’s Deals writeup, because if you see any deals above that you want, you’ll likely also be able to do them at Walmart.
However, if there IS an ad with noteworthy sales or I’m aware of great coupon matchups, you’ll find those here too.

As always, these deals are guidelines for shopping. I can make no guarantee that these items will be on sale, in stock, or available at your area store. I can also not guarantee your Catalinas will print, your cashier will smile at you while you check out, or that your shopping cart won’t have a broken wheel. But I CAN teach you how to save money :)
And, also, as always, a huge thanks to the many readers who posted and emailed deals that made it into today’s Deals of the Week! We’re all in this together, and I sincerely appreciate everyone who spots and passes along good deals that we can all enjoy :) Thank you… to YOU!
* All You magazine: If you like coupons, you will probably really enjoy it. It’s an inexpensive magazine ($2.49 an issue) that is absolutely filled with coupons each month — typically $50-$100 worth per issue! Subscribing via the pink banner on the right drops the price to $1.67 per issue. Depending on the values, if you use 2 or 3 coupons alone from each issue, you’ve recouped the cost of the magazine, and you’re on your way to even bigger savings.)

When my children were still eating baby food, I also made my own like Jill. If there were any great sales on fruits or veggies, I’d buy a lot and prepare them at home. I’d freeze the puree in ice cube trays. When frozen, I’d put them in freezer bags. Because of this, my kids had a huge variety of foods at an early age–okra, broccoli, zucchini, mango, etc. After a while, I’d blend whatever we were having for dinner. Now they’re 5, 3 1/2, and 15 months and will eat whatever I put in front of them…and they all LOVE salad :-)

I was at Meijer, yesterday, doing the Kelloggs/FOL deal and noticed that some of the cereals are on sale for $1.88. It was the 18 oz sized boxes and I’m pretty sure it was Frosted Mini-Wheats, COrn Pops, Fruit Loops, and Apple Jacks. So, with coupons, I got 6 boxes of mini-wheats, 2 packages of boys underwear, and 1 package of boys socks for a little over $14.
jillanded says
An even better deal for nutri grain bars and rice krispie treats- price match the jewel add at Target and stack the new coupons in this weeks’ inserts and the coupons on Target’s website. Instead on $1.88 per box, you pay 88 cents!

How do you guys find out about the coupons for the jeans? Also I signed up for Que Rica Vida but have not received the mailers.

If I have two of these coupons can I use this with my Fresh Values card in two different transactions of $50.00? I used one on Friday and want to use the second today. Has anyone successful use more than one. Thanks.

My papers also had a green Target insert. It has a picture of a bus going to a school on it and on the bottom it says there are over $15 worth of savings.

I found this link for a coupon for $.50 when you buy 2 Banquet frozen meals. I was able to print the coupon 6x!!!!!! Jewel has the Banquet meals on sale for a $1 (10 for $10).

You will have to input the code 63829897 to print each of these coupons.

Ok, since I haven’t done a catalina at DOMS in a long time, can you buy multiples of the kelloggs deal in the same transaction, or do I have to different transactions of multiples of 6? Thank you!

Forgive me if this is a much answered question. . . I’m just trying to sweeten the Dominick’s $10 off $50 coupon deal. Last Thursday’s Jewel ad had a number of coupons in the center of the flyer. Some are store Qs and some are MF Qs. Just above the fine print, the MF Qs say “redeemable at Jewel-Osco.” Does that mean this MF Q can only be used at Jewel? The store Q is obvious, especially since it also says “redeemable only at Jewel-Osco.” There are $1 Aquafina Qs that I want to use on the beverage stock up sale at Dominick (buy 10 and get an extra $0.50 off each item). $3.99 a case, less $0.50 (buy 10 deal, less $0.50 ($1 off 2 cases))= $2.99 then the $10 off $50. Then it’s a really good deal! Thanks!

Anyone who was having problems getting their Red Plum have better luck this week?
I called 4 times, and was told the delivery dept. would get back to me, never did.
4 weeks now, no Red Plum.

Bought 6 Kelloggs Frosted Flakes Cereal (14oz), for $12, used 2 $1 off 3 coupon, got back a $3 Catalina AND these boxes were marked with the CARS Cash. So, I redeemed my 4pts for $5 gas card. So, $12 minus $2 coupon, minus $3 Catalina, minus $5 gas card = $2 for 6 boxes of cereal (or 0.33 cents a box). Not bad for Dominicks!!

had peelies on the Rice Krispies for free marshmallows when you buy two R.K. or Cocoa Krispies. So you can throw some marshmallows in the cart, too. I got some of the new Jet Puffed Stackers.

I had 2, $1.00 off 1/2 pound of Di Lusso from the 7/16 S insert. Di Lusso was on sale at my Jewel and the girls gave me 2, (FREE 1/4 pound my choice) of Di Lusso cheese with each 1/2 pound meat I purchased. Not sure what all this cost but was a great deal considering I buy this brand full price or sale. I also was handed a stack of coupons for 55 cents off next purchase of Di Lusso too.

I found a 3lb package of country ribs in the manager’s special bin at Jewel. It was originally priced $7. It had a $3 off peelie on the package, and I used the $2 off ribs coupon that came in the Jewel email. So, I ended up with 3lbs of ribs for $2. Yeah!

Beware that the Elgin Meijer has 6pk full size candy bars on clearance for $.92 (cereal / candy isle) (mr goodbars & Hershey cookies and cream). Please be careful all of the mr. goodbars have a date of 2009 & 2010. The cookies and cream had a 2012 date, but I think they might be out of them by now.

The eggs at the Meijer in St. Charles were $1.64 not $.99 – too bad since I have a $.55 off 2 coupon too!

This may have been mentioend but I finally got around to reading a magazine that came in a week or two ago. The September Issue of Woman’s Day (currently on sale)
Has a few coupons scattered through the magazine but it has two tear out coupon inserts with some high value coupons. One section is for Safeway/Domicks stores – it has the same save $5 on $15 of Frozen products that is in this week’s Dominicks paper but it expires 8/17. There are several other frozen food coupons in it, I think all must be used at Dominicks.
The other has some high values on scrubbing bubbles products. I think there is a $5 for the shower scrubber starter kit. These are definitely manufacturer coupons.

Jewel in Algonquin on Randall and on Hwy 14 in Crystal Lake still had the freezers with coupons on Wednesday.

Did anybody have any luck finding the Keri Lotion at Walgreens this week?
I’ve check 3 stores and they are all out.
One clerk said they didn’t order enough as they didn’t anticipate the run on them.
I was offered a rain check only for the sale price, not the RR.
I declined of course.
One location said they may get some in on Saturday morning.
Bummed I may have missed out on this one.

With the Huggies wipes you can use the Walgeens August book coupon as well as the Walgreen $2 off in the Infant Care Book, not sure of the name, I clipped the coupon only ( these were out a couple months ago) and .50, which brings the wipes down to $1.49

When I asked customer service what was up, they said will be no more coupon books.

My Target and Walmart is getting increasing hostile towards me when I try to get the trial size tide and cascade for free by using the $1.00 off coupons. I do the deals the way the coupon states 4 per transaction and the coupon also states $1.00 off “ANY” size tide/cascade. Can the store tell me they won’t sell this to me? I looked at Walmarts coupon policy and nowhere did I see that it was to their discretion to void a legit coupon…. I’m confused, upset and just want to give up. I’ve been following Jill for over a year now and have aquired an awesome stockpile, I don’t want to stop because it’s great to get things for free and for pennies but since that horrible show on TLC came on cashiers seem to be increasingly hostile to me when I pull out my coupons. Just the looks in general I get are not usually good ones. Not only do the cashiers at Target and especially Walmart need to be properly TRAINED on the coupons but they also need to be properly TRAINED on how to treat people that are paying their salaries! A cashier at Target told me I couldn’t use the $1.00 off coupons on trial size, I said it states “any” size so she went to the lady that was cashiering at the Starbucks in Target to ask. The lady said clearly and loud as can be “she can’t use these on trial size”. I said “get a CSM over here please and ask her because I know I can use these”. She did and the CSM said that I could use them because it stated “any” size! I was happy but don’t want to deal with this EVERY time I shop or am trying to get a good deal to stockpile.
Help Jill, what to do with crazy uneducated cashiers!!
Thank you,
Crissy T.
