Super-Couponers, welcome to your last Deals of the Week of 2010!
As the year winds down, I hope you’ve all enjoyed saving lots of money on your groceries as much as I have! Many readers have been emailing and posting about how much they’ve saved over the past year, and notes like these are always fun and inspiring to read. As is typical for grocery sales this time of year, this week’s deals are a little light, but once the new year hits, get ready to jump in to coupon madness again!
The New Year’s Sunday paper is scheduled to be a FIVE INSERT week though (2 SmartSource, 2 RedPlum, and 1 General Mills,) so if you’re the kind to buy extra papers, it’s a great week to do that. Remember that Dollar Tree and Menards sell the Sunday Chicago Tribune for $1, so pick those up on January 2!
New blog readers: If you’re interested in learning to save on almost everything you buy at the grocery store, why not make a New Year’s resolution for 2011 to attend a Super-Couponing workshop? Many are FREE, and in one hour you’ll learn how to cut your grocery bill 50-70%! January 2011 Super-Couponing classes are taking place in Waterman, Arlington Heights, and Palatine. Learn more!
This week’s newspaper contained one insert, Procter & Gamble (P&G.)

Grocery Deals
Starting at Jewel (View weekly ad)…
Note that this week’s Jewel ad runs from Dec. 26th through Saturday, January 1st due to the New Year’s holiday. A rare, week-long Sunday flyer for Jewel…
Here’s a deal on P.F. Chang’s frozen Chinese dinners for two. They’re on sale for $6.99 this week. Check your Avenu for a $2.50 ecoupon to use with this deal. The 12/5 RP has a $1 coupon. With these stacked, you’ll pay $3.49 per meal – less than half price, and I’ve only seen them cheaper than this on one other occasion this year.
When frozen meatballs are on sale, I’d rather buy them than make my own… especially around the holidays! This week, Mama Lucia frozen meatballs (12oz.) are on sale for $3.99, Buy One Get Two Free. 36oz. of meatballs for $3.99 is about $1.77/lb – a good price.
The same meatballs, same size box, are also on sale at Dominick’s this week for $1.
Bumble Bee tuna pouches are on sale for $1 each. Use the .55 coupon from 9/12 SS2 and pay .45! Look in the coupon dispenser near the product for more .55 coupons too.
Reader Dolrskolr spotted a deal on 20ct. Excedrin PM. It’s on sale for $2.99. Use the $2.50 coupon from 12/5 SS and pay .49!
“Buy 10, Save $2” Instant-Savings sale Buying any 10 participating items generates $2 in instant savings. Prices shown are AFTER instant savings. You must buy in quantities of ten to receive these prices. Here are your products and matchups: Banquet regular dinners – .80 Blue Bonnet margarine quarters 16oz. – .80 Brown N’ Serve sausages – .80 Chef Boyardee canned and microwave pasta – .80 Hunt’s pasta sauce – .80 Hunt’s tomatoes – .80 Manwich – .80 Rosarita refried beans – .80 Ro-Tel tomatoes – .80 |
Procter & Gamble “Spend $20, Get $5” Catalina Here are your products and matchups: Always pads or liners – $5.79 Bounce Dryer Bars – $4.99 Bounce Dryer Sheets – $4.99 Bounty 12ct. Paper Towels – $12.99 Cascade – $4.49 Charmin 24ct. rolls – $11.99 Crest Toothpaste – $2.50 Dawn Dish Detergent – $2.49 Downy – $4.99 Duracell Alkaline Batteries – $5.99 Febreze Air Effects – $2.69 Febreze Noticeables – $2.69 Febreze Set and Refresh – $2.69 Glide Floss – $2.50 Mr. Clean liquid cleaners (pourable, spray) – $2.49 Mr. Clean Magic Erasers – $2.49 Nice ‘N Easy hair color or root touch-up – $5.99 Olay Bar Soap or Body Wash – $5.99 Old Spice deodorant Oral B Toothbrushes – $2.50 Pampers Big Pack Diapers, Baby-Dry or Easy-Ups – $19.99 Pampers wipes 180-216ct. – $5.99 Pantene – $2.99 (Note: Stay away from any bottles marked 20% or 25% bonus – these typically do NOT generate the Catalina!) Pringles – $1.50 Secret deodorant – $1.99 Swiffer dry refills, wet refills, dusters or duster refills – $8.49 Tampax -$5.79 Tide – $10.99 Tide Stain Release – $10.99 |
Honestly, I’m not terribly excited about this sale – I like a larger spread (like a $25/$10) for some good Catalina action! But if you’re jumping into this deal, the best items to work in are Pantene and Old Spice, both of which have Buy One Get One Free coupons to throw into the mix.
For example…
An Old-Spice / Pantene Scenario
Buy 2 Old Spice deodorants ($1.99 each)
Buy 6 Pantene ($2.99 each)
Pre-coupon total: $21.92
Use 1 B1G1F Old Spice coupon and 3 B1G1F Pantene coupons.
Pay $10.96 and get a $5 Catalina – $5.96 for all is about .75 per item.
Remember that there’s a “Spend $50, get $20” rebate going on Olay, Venus, Secret, Covergirl, Pantene, Herbal Essences and/or Clairol products! Save your receipts for this one… form is here.
_____________________________
If you’re buying Pampers, they’re just a penny away from $20.
Throw in something cheap (cans of Pringles are $1.50, or use a Secret deodorant [$1.99, minus .50 Secret coupon)
Grab a pack of ThickCare wipes too if you have the “Buy diapers, get free wipes” coupon.
If you used the $1.50 Pampers coupon, pay $19.98 and get a $5 Catalina. That’s $14.98 for the Pampers, plus wipes, plus Pringles OR Secret.
Deals continuing from previous weeks:
$25 Jewel-Osco Gift Card rebate: $25 worth of FREE Kimberly-Clark paper products! – AVAILABLE FOR ALL STORES!
I’m not a huge rebater (honestly, a rebate has to be double-digits [$10 or more] to catch my interest.) But did you see the $25 Jewel Gift Card rebate? Their “Que Bueno es ser Madre y Mujer” (“It’s good to be Mother and Woman”) promotion on the second-to-last page of last week’s Spanish Jewel ad, as well as the current Jewel Spotlight magazine offers a rebate for a free $25 Jewel-Osco gift card with a $25 purchase of ANY Kimberly-Clark paper products! The wording on this one is a little confusing regarding using coupons on the products. The terms state “Total net price (excluding taxes, coupons or any other discounts) of purchased Kimberly-Clark products must be $25.00 or more.” However, “net price” usually means AFTER all discounts (“gross” would be before any discounts.)
To be on the safe side, I would go over $25 AFTER coupons. With the gift card, you’re still getting the $25 back regardless, but if you use coupons, you’re bringing more products home for your $25, if that makes sense. People looking for diaper deals will love this — free or crazily cheap diapers! (You could buy that $29.99 diaper box too with the $2 peelie, pay $27.99 and get $25 back — that’s a lot of diapers for $2.99.)
Or, stock up on what you need. $25 worth of toilet paper or paper towels may seem like a lot to bring home at once, but if it’s FREE? Go for it!
Note too that this rebate is valid through 1/15/11 while supplies last. If you don’t jump on this one right away, there is a chance you may not receive the card, as we don’t know how many gift cards are actually allocated to this promotion.
Tribe Origins All-Natural Hummus is on sale for $1 (through 12/31.) Print this $1 coupon and pay… nothing! It’s FREE! (It’s also a PDF, which means you can print multiple times.)
In the Dominick’s $60 Thanksgiving coupon book, there’s a coupon for $1 off Swiss Miss Hot Cocoa. Swiss Miss is on sale for $1 too through the end of the year – FREE with this coupon!
In the same Dominick’s book, there’s also a coupon for $1 off any Sierra Mist Natural. 2 liters of this are on sale for $1.25, so you’ll pay .25 after coupon! If you have four of these coupons, the 12-packs are on sale for $1.50 each when you buy four. Buy four, use four coupons and pay $1.50 per 12-pack!
Nature’s Farm natural, hormone-free milk is on sale for $2.99 a half-gallon carton (through 12/31.) Look in the refrigerated case near the milk for a tearpad of $2 coupons. With coupon, you’ll pay .99 a carton!
Note that while this milk does not state “organic,” it seems to be similar in taste/quality as organic — and for the price, I’ll happily make the switch for a few weeks! I also noticed that at one store, the tearpad had $2 coupons on top, and midway through they switched to $1 coupons. Just a heads-up. Tearpad coupons expire 12/31/10.
Jewel-Osco has a Facebook page. If you have questions directly for corporate, you can ask them there (and they answer promptly!) They’ve also got the free cookware promo under way, so save your stickers from qualifying receipts to earn free pots and pans.
Are you on the Jewel-Osco email list yet? Jewel has been making coupons available for many different products over the past few months, and they’re usually store coupons that you can stack manufacturer coupons with too. I’d recommend getting on their list if you shop there.

Jewel meat deals:
- On-Cor breaded chicken strips (10oz.) are on sale for $1.49 a package.
- Mama Lucia frozen meatballs (12oz.) are $3.99, buy one get two free. 36oz. of meatballs for $3.99 is about $1.77/lb.
- Perdue oven stuffer roasters are $1.79/lb.
Jewel produce deals:
- Red or white onions are .99/lb.
- Roma tomatoes are .99/lb.
- Cuties clementines are $5.99 for a 5lb. box. Use the $1 coupon from 12/5 SS and pay $4.99 – about $1/lb!
- 1lb. bags of Wild Harvest organic baby carrots are $1.49.
- Hass avocados are .99 each.
(Anytime meat is under $1.99 a pound (no matter what it is — beef, pork, poultry) it’s a buy in my book, because $1.99 is a cycle low and a good benchmark for meat prices — ditto for most produce. Seafood, by its nature, is more expensive per pound, but a good “buy” benchmark is $4 per pound or less for fish or shrimp.)
Let’s go to Dominick’s (View weekly ad)…
Note to my Safeway shoppers reading from outside Chicagoland: In Chicago, Dominick’s currently accepts expired coupons up to one year past the expiration date, so my coupon matchups for Dominick’s deals will include expired coupons. If an expired coupon matchup is provided, it will be noted with (exp) after the date. Also, in Chicago, Dominick’s does not double coupons (as other Safeway stores do) – if your store doubles, you’ll do even better with many of these deals. Also, in Chicago, previously-available ecoupons are being rolled into the “Just For U” section of electronic coupons available at Dominicks.com.
Dominick’s Super Coupons:
These are store coupons found in the weekly Dominick’s flyer, which (in the case of the name-brand products) means they can be stacked with manufacturer coupons for even bigger savings. You can also now load these Super Coupons to your Fresh Values card via Dominicks.com and not have to clip them. Best bet this week?
In the Dec. 26-29 flyer – “Big Savings” on cover:
- Kleenex boxes are on sale for .99, limit 2, with Super Coupon. Several of the small yellow monthly/seasonal Dominick’s coupon books have had $1-off-2 coupons inside that will make this .49 a box.
If you find yourself short on ice cream, there’s a Just For U ecoupon for a 1.5qt. of Breyers for $1.99. Load it at Dominick’s.com…
Several readers wrote to say that the single pouches of Purina One dog and cat food are on sale for $1.99. Use the $2 coupons from 12/5 SS, 10/17 SS (exp,) 8/15 SS (exp,) and 6/27 SS (exp) and it’s FREE! There’s also a $2 ecoupon to load at Dominick’s Just For U for MORE free pet food.
Minute Maid orange juice is on sale for $2.50. Load the $1 ecoupon from Dominick’s Just For U and pay $1.50!
Mama Lucia Italian meatballs (12oz.) are on sale for $1 a box — this is an excellent price for these, as it works out to $1.33/lb!
Deals continuing from previous weeks:
Nivea Lip Balm is on sale for .99. Use the $1 coupons from 10/3 RP (exp,) 5/2 RP (exp,) October All You (exp,) or September All You (exp) and it’s FREE!

If you haven’t yet signed up for the new “Just For U” electronic discounts that you can load to your Dominick’s Fresh Values card, you may want to. For registering your card, you’ll receive an ecoupon for a FREE 12-ct. Lucerne large eggs! You’ll also activate a set of electronic discounts that are tied to your card for the next 90 days. Each person’s discounts are different, and they’re based on past purchases made with your Fresh Values card at Dominick’s. Learn more here.

Heading over to Meijer, here are your best deals for Meijer stores in in Algonquin, Aurora, Bloomingdale, Bolingbrook, Elgin, McHenry, Oswego, Plainfield, Rolling Meadows, St. Charles, and the Indianapolis area: (View weekly ad)…

International Delight coffee creamer (16oz.) is on sale for .99. Use this .55 printable and pay .44!
Tyson bagged, breaded chicken (25.5-29oz.) is on sale for $3.99. Use the $1 coupons from the 10/10 SS or the Dominick’s $60 Thanksgiving book and pay $2.99!
Pam cooking spray is a good buy this week. It’s on sale for $2. Buy two and use the $1-off-2 Meijer Mealbox coupon. Stack this with two manufacturer coupons: 11/14 SS has .35 and .50 coupons, and the Dominick’s $60 Thanksgiving coupon book has a $1 coupon.
With two $1 coupons, pay $1 for two cans, or .50 each!
The SAME deal is running on Wesson Oil. It’s also $2 – print the Mealbox coupon and stack it with the .40 coupon from 11/14 SS or the $1 coupon in the Dominick’s $60 Thanksgiving coupon book.
Purex laundry detergent (72oz! BIG bottle) is on sale for $2.99. Use this .35 printable and pay $2.64.
Meijer’s also running a P&G “Spend $50, get $10 rebate” sale. Honestly, there’s nothing earth-shattering happening here.

Minute Maid lemonade, limeade or punch are .99 a half-gallon carton.
Meijer pickles (16-24oz.) are $1.67 a jar.

Then, when you’re at the checkout, type your cellphone number into the keypad at the register, and your coupons come off automatically.

- 5lb. bags of red, Klondike rose or yellow potatoes are $2.50 – that’s .50/lb.
- 8lb. bags of Michigan red delicious apples are $4.99 – that’s about .63/lb.
- 5lb. boxes of clementines are $3.99 – that’s about .80/lb.
- Mangos are $1 each
Note that Meijers in other states are on different schedules. The Illinois Meijers are about a week behind on the sales vs. most of Indiana/Michigan. If you’re in Illinois, these Meijer deals run through Wednesday. If you’re reading from another state, they ENDED Saturday at your store… Confusing? Yes.
AND, if you shop at the Illinois NILES or ORLAND Meijer locations, they haven’t been following the same sale flyer as the other Illinois Meijers, under the convoluted reasoning that because the stores are newer, people will shop there -without- as many products being on sale. O-kay.
Here are your Hilander and Kroger deals (View weekly Hilander ad | View weekly Kroger ad)…
This week, Hilander has a tiny ad that runs Dec. 26-28th — there’s not a lot happening sale-wise, with no meat or produce specials in the ad either.
“No Coupon Needed” Deals:
Minute Maid orange juice half-gallons are on sale for $2 each.
Kroger spices and extracts are $1 each.
VO5 shampoo and conditioners are .77 each.
Remember that Hilander doubles coupons up to .55 face value every day! You are only allowed to double two of the SAME coupon per day though — additional coupons will ring at face value. (Split your trips if you’re stocking up!)
Readers outside Illinois will want to check with their local Kroger or Kroger-affiliated stores to determine how they handle coupon doubling.
Off to Target
(View weekly ad)…
This Sunday’s 12/26 PG has a coupon for $2 off any Olay body wash, bar or lotion. Many Targets sell single bars of Olay soap in the travel section for .97. With this coupon, get one FREE!

A few readers sent this little deal on Up and Up pantiliners. They’re on sale for .89. Print this .75 Target store coupon and pay .14!
Since we’re light on grocery deals this week, here are a couple non-grocery good buys at Target this week too:
Tuari neoprene laptop sleeves are $5. This is a steal if you need a skinny zipper case for your laptop. (Super nice if you travel too, as they can go through an airport scanner without being opened.)
Room Essentials storage ottomans are $15. These are pretty big, with a padded cushion “seat” top, and that’s cheap!
Target meat deals:
- 1lb. packages of all-natural 80% lean ground beef are $1.99.
Target produce deals:
- 5lb. bags of oranges are $2.99 – that’s about .60/lb.
Target Notes:
Target has launched mobile Target coupons which you can load to your phone. They are Target store coupons that you can stack manufacturer coupons with. Load coupons here. You can also print these offers by going to www.target.com/save and entering your phone number.
Remember too that you get .05 off your total at Target for each reusable bag you bring and use. If you pay with the Target credit card, you receive another 5% off.

As always, these deals are guidelines for shopping. I can make no guarantee that these items will be on sale, in stock, or available at your area store. I can also not guarantee your Catalinas will print, your cashier will smile at you while you check out, or that your shopping cart won’t have a broken wheel. But I CAN teach you how to save money :)
And, also, as always, a huge thanks to the many readers who posted and emailed deals that made it into today’s Deals of the Week! We’re all in this together, and I sincerely appreciate everyone who spots and passes along good deals that we can all enjoy :) Thank you… to YOU!
* (All You magazine is not a requirement for using the site, but if you like coupons, you will probably really enjoy it. It’s a cheap ($2.49 an issue) magazine that is absolutely filled with coupons each month — typically $50-$100 worth per issue! You can subscribe to All You online and save about $10/year off the cover price. And depending on the values, if you use 2 or 3 coupons alone from each issue, you’ve recouped the cost of the magazine, and you’re on your way to even bigger savings.)

First, let me say I hope you had a wonderful Christmas, Jill. And thank you for all you have taught me which enabled me to give my son a nice Christmas even though I have been unemployed for a very, very long time.
I tried the Nestle Abuelita hot chocolate! I think I am now ruined for any other kind of hot chocolate. My son and I had it on Christmas morning with our bagels and it was delicious! Thanks for recommending it. Fortunately, I had Dominick’s $60 Thanksgiving book $1 coupons (EIGHT of them!) for this stuff. I have eight boxes of it now and along with the Swiss Miss I have more than enough hot chocolate to last through what I suspect is going to be a very harsh winter here in Chicagoland.
I also got plenty of Swanson’s Broth which I like to use instead of water when I make rice and, of course, for homemade chicken soup.
Thanks again!

I have a question though: It says “Limit one gift card per request”. Does that mean I can send multiple envelopes with requests for gift cards? Or just one per household? Just want to be 100% certain of the wording here. :o)

Jewel’s ad notes that the $5 catalina is valid with a $20 purchase on your post coupon total. Has anyone confirmed this?

Just got back from Jewel and got the Bumble Bee Tuna and Excedrin PM deals. Glad I am off today- there were only 4 Excedrin boxes left and I bought 3 of them.
As a side thought- The 2.5 oz tuna packs at $1 a piece bring the cost of a pound of tuna to 6.40- that is crazy for some tuna- I can get steak on sale for that price…..lol….but as I said, I got it anyway…it’s good for bringing lunch to work.
Thank you Jill for all the deals you find for us every week- It makes such a difference.
Also did the Pantene deal at Walgreens- used the BOGO q from the Nov. P&G and then used a $2 RR from Colgate bringing my OOP to 2.20 and then got back another RR for $2.

I am relatively new to this. I have inserts back to April filed by date. I know some stores take expired coupons. Ultra takes up to 30 days past date, but I don’t know how long dominicks takes them. How long do most of you keep inserts?

Pantene shampoo, conditioner and styling products are on sale at CVS 2/$6.97 with $2.00 ECB. Use the $3.00/2 coupon from 12/26 PG. So far this is a good deal, make it even better by using the B2G1F coupon from 11/28 PG. This brings the price down to $0.65 each.

I tried the PF Chang’s at Jewel today, but they rang up as $9.99 instead of $6.50. Hubby was disappointed, he’s been wanting to try those for a while! Didn’t see them advertised as $6.50 anywhere – any ideas as to what was up with that?

I have tried using the $1.00 Tide Q’s at Meijer in McHenry and it was a no go. They (Service Desk/Manager)stated that the Q’s would not work for them. Have you had any luck?? They seem pretty strict there with all of their Q’s.

I did three old spice anti perspirant/ deodorants and three old spice high indurance body wash 24 oz . Used three buy deodorant get body wash free . And a dollar off two deodorants and received the cat. I looked at the upc list at the service desk and the body wash is included. The smaller swagger and after hours ones were not included on the list. The coupon is only good up to $3.99 and they are $4.79. So had to pay some towards it.Also used a $5 cat so paid $2.84 I think?? andgot $5 back . Works for me.

the McHenry Jewel. I didn’t buy three to see if they were truly B1G2F as stated in the write-up. Anyone else get the 2 free? The ones I saw were in the 12oz boxes. Hmmmmm, would a scanner tell me?

I was told (by Jewel employee) that the meatballs will be B1G2 on Thursday, and that the PFChang meals were on sale LAST week. I did not see these in my current (Sun.) ad.

I know the Just for U setup where they offer personalized pricing which from time to time I have selected and seems closely in line with prior purchases I have made. You mentioned in the Dom’s sales for the week the Minute Maid being on sale for $2.50 with the ecoupon available for $1. I didn’t see it so am I to assume that not everyone has the same ecoupon offerings as well?
Second question is rather a confirmation in that if I select an e-coupon, I can’t use a mfg coupon with it either (stacking)?

My Jewel (Morris) did not have the brand of meatballs Jill mentioned on B2G1 or even B1G1 – however, the Jennie-O turkey meatballs were $5.99 and B1G1 – with a 55-cent coupon on each bag. So I was able to get two bags for $4.94. I also bought two Jennie-O turkey roasts for $5.99 B1G1 – I got a Catalina (not sure which purchase triggered it) for $5.00 off any 3 bags of Jennie-O meatballs – so if I can get back and use it while this sale is still on, I’ll get 4 more bags for $6.98 – not bad! (Don’t know if they’ll let me stack this with the 55-cent coupons on the bags or not. . .)

I went to Hilander in Cherry Valley yesterday. I scored a great deal on glade 4 oz candles! Of course they were the Winter scents, still a great deal. They were marked $2.49 each, but with your Hilander values card they ended up being $1.34. So, of course I used my various $1/1 coupons and 2 $3/3 coupons and paid .34 cents each! I’ve been watching for all the Christmas deals for these candles and this one by far was the best! I bought 8 candles for $2.72! The price of 1!
Not to mention the other P&G deals they’ve got going on this week! Check out the Charmin deal! I paid $1.99 for 12 double roll of Charmin. Load your Ecoupons for Hilander!
