Grocery Deals
Starting at Jewel, their biggest deal of the week is their once-a-year FREEZER DEAL. In case you somehow missed this, everything’s outlined in the Freezer discussion – $150 for a 5.2 cubic foot chest freezer plus $150 worth of free frozen food coupons. The deal continues through today, Monday, though the freezers may be getting difficult to find. If you did buy a freezer, the Baldwin ice cream is on sale Buy One, Get One Free through Feb. 13. Take your coupon and go get TWO free tubs! Reader Merebere1975 posted that the McCain Frozen Potatoes are ALSO B1G1F this week. We’ll be keeping track of the B1G1F sales for the freezer coupons in this Forum discussion.
Here’s a quick and easy freebie! Reach dental floss is on sale for $1. Use the $1 coupon in 1/3 RP1 to take it home… FREE!
Jewel has a good deal going on Kraft salad dressing. It’s on sale for $2.49 a bottle, but there’s a manufacturer coupon in the current Jewel flyer for $1.50 off – bringing the price to .99 a bottle. Now, there’s also a Catalina deal running on Ranch or Italian varieties of Kraft salad dressings. Buy 4 and get $3 back. So, buy 4 bottles. You’ll need 4 coupons from the flyer (one per bottle) – but look on the flyer racks at your store, as many stores have sheets of these coupons available there too. With 4 coupons, pay $3.98 and get $3 back! You’ll ultimately pay .98 for 4, or under a quarter a bottle… and every coupon you need for this deal can be found in the store.
Now, if you’ve got South Beach salad dressings on your Avenu, this deal gets better. South Beach is a Kraft dressing too, and many people have reported $1.25-$1.50 electronic coupons for this. Grab Ranch and/or Italian and these bottles will be FREE with overage!
If you didn’t get enough of eating tortilla chips during yesterday’s Super Bowl, there’s a good sale going on them! Grande Tortilla Chips are on sale for $2. Use the $1 coupon in 1/10 SS and cut that price in half to $1!
Several varieties of children’s vitamins are on sale this week — and we don’t often see great prices on these, so it’s time to stock up if you’ve got little ones. Disney Children’s Vitamins are on sale for $7.99, Buy One Get One Free. With two $1 coupons from any of the following locations: 1/3 RP1, 1/24 RP, January All You, or printable, use a coupon on each box and pay $5.99 for two, or about $3 each!
Centrum for Kids are also on sale for $4.99 a bottle. Use the $2 coupon from 1/3 RP2 and take them home for $2.99!
Trident Layers gum is on sale for $1 a pack. Use the .75 coupon from 2/7 SS and take it home for .25! There’s also a $1-off-2 coupon in the December All You — with this, get 2 more packs for $1, or .50 each…
A variety of Kraft cheeses are not a bad price this week either. With the coupons in the current weekly Jewel ad, buy 2 packages of Kraft shredded, chunk, or cheese singles and pay $1.50 each…
When you’re at Jewel this week, look for a display containing these free coupon books. There are lots of great, high-value coupons inside, but the one you’ll want to use this week is for Fresh Express Salad – bags are on sale for $1.50. With this coupon, they’re just .50!
If you received your Home Made Simple coupon book, there’s a good coupon inside that you may want to use this week. Dawn Direct Foam dish detergent is on sale for $2. Use the $1.50 coupon from Home Made Simple to take it home for .50!
If you need toilet paper, Angel Soft 12-roll packs are $5.99. Use this $1 coupon and take it home for $4.99 – not a terrible price if you’re in need of this.
Continuing this week, Barnum’s Animal Crackers (oh yes, the cute ones in the little box we all ate as kids!) are on sale for $1 a box. Use this $2 off 2 coupon for any Nabisco crackers and get 2 boxes… free! If you really like animal crackers, use the same coupon to pick up two 8-ounce bags. They’re priced at $1.69 each, so you’ll pay .69 each for the large bag.
There’s a great high-value coupon out for Baby Basics diapers (Jewel’s house brand.) Print this $4 coupon and cut the price in half, as most jumbo packs are $7.99. Some stores may have the larger boxes on clearance for $9.99. With coupon, pay $4.99 for these.
Continuing from previous weeks, if you’re a fan of Jewel’s Wild Harvest line of organics, here’s your chance to take some home FREE! Numerous Wild Harvest snacks are on clearance for $1 at many stores (look for herbed saltines, “Endangered Species” kids’ crackers [cheddar shapes, like Goldfish] and a few others. Some readers have reported seeing Wild Harvest frozen waffles on clearance for $1.49 – with the coupon, they’ll be just .49. Others saw cookies clearanced to $1.50 — just .50 with coupon! Jars of Wild Harvest baby food are under a buck – FREE with this coupon. One reader spotted Wild Harvest tortilla chips B1G1F for $2.89. With 2 coupons, they’re .89 for BOTH.

If you’re planning to buy Kraft products this week, check out www.kraftsupervalu.com, which has many $1 printables for products in the current ad…

Now…
My black belt couponers know that these deals typically work differently at Jewel than at any other store.
VERY IMPORTANT: If you have never done a high-level Catalina deal at Jewel before, please read this short overview of the way the price structure works. In a nutshell, if you base your dollar-spent mark on the non-Preferred prices, you can save even more money and spend less out of pocket. But, to do this, you must be willing to verify prices at the store’s price scanner BEFORE going to checkout.
If this makes no sense or is the least bit confusing to you… do NOT do the deal in this way. These high-level Catalina deals can be very confusing, especially when you’re new at this. If you are new, use the PREFERRED price only, and you’ll get the Catalina every time. But if you’re a “black belt” couponer and want to maximize your savings… here’s the best deal for the week: An all-popcorn deal REMEMBER… ALWAYS, ALWAYS verify prices at your store at the price-checker BEFORE using the above scenarios. You are using these matchups at YOUR OWN RISK. |
Jewel meat deals:
- Fresh whole chicken fryers are .99/lb
- Fresh split chicken breasts are $1.99/lb
- Fresh pork spare ribs are $1.99/lb
- St. Louis Style pork back ribs are $2.49/lb
- Pork back ribs are $2.99/lb
(Anytime meat is under $1.99 a pound (no matter what it is — beef, pork, poultry, or seafood) it’s a buy in my book, because $1.99 is a cycle low and a good benchmark for meat prices.) I noted all of the sale ribs this week because these are great prices for these too!
Jewel produce deals:
- Large ripe avocados – .88
- Dole whole golden pineapples are $1.88 each, limit 3 – GREAT PRICE!
Let’s talk Dominick’s! Before we dig into this week’s Dominick’s deals, if you haven’t read or had a chance to respond to this Dominick’s discussion regarding customer service and coupon issues in their stores, please do. I have been in touch with Dominick’s Public Affairs department, and they are reading this discussion. So many readers have taken a few moments to share their concerns.
If there is anything (good or bad) you’d like to share or add to this discussion of coupon acceptance at Dominick’s, please take a moment to do so.
And now… on to the Dominick’s deals!
This week, Wonder bread is on sale for $1.50 a loaf. Use the .55 coupon from 8/30/09 RP and it’s .95!
If you missed last week’s deals on DiGiorno, California Pizza Kitchen, Freschetta, Red Baron and Safeway Select pizzas, there’s a similar sale going at Dominick’s. They’re running a “Buy 3, save $3″ on these, and for every 3 you buy, you save $3 instantly.
Prices shown are when purchased in quantities of 3 – remember, you can buy 3, 6, 9, and so on, but it must be a multiple of 3.
$3.99 group:
DiGiorno 12.6-32.7oz pizzas

$2.99 group:
Red Baron Classic or Thin Crust 14.76-22.1oz pizzas

– $1-off-2 – 1/31 SS
Safeway Select 14.25-32.7oz
– no current coupons, but the 32.7 ounce (big!) pizza would be your best bet here.
Mix and match any way you want – with $1 coupons, the prices of the $3.99 pizzas drop to $2.99, and the Red Barons come down to $1.99 or $2.49 each, depending on coupons. A very good pizza deal, any way you “slice” it… ha!

An easy, quick scenario:
Buy 6 “mini” cans of biscuits or rolls (.99 each at most stores.) Pay $6 and get $4! With one .50-off-2, pay $5.50 and get $4 … with a .75-off-3, pay $5.25 and get $4… you get the idea :)
As usual, there are some Dominick’s Super Coupons* in this week’s ads too:
- Oscar Mayer Hot Dogs are .99 – buy 2, use $1-off-2 coupon from 8/23/09 SS and/or 6/21/09 SS and pay less than .50 each!
- Wonderful Pistachios are $2.99 – use $1 coupon from 11/15/09 SS to make them the bargain price of $1.99.
- Mission Tortillas are .99 – use .75 coupon from 1/10 SS or Jewel Preferred Card Update Booklet and pay .24!
- Eating Right single pizzas or entrees are $1.50 when purchased in quantities of 8 (good thing you bought a freezer this past weekend, right?!)

Dominick’s meat deals:
- Safeway chicken drumsticks, thighs or leg quarters are .99/lb
- Fresh Perdue whole chicken is $1.29/lb
- Rancher’s Reserve beef chuck 7-bone roast is $1.57/lb. Sweeten this deal with a coupon for $2 off a $10 purchase of Rancher’s Reserve. So, if you buy 6.5lbs. of roast, you’ll be over $10 ($10.20) – use coupon, pay $8.20 – that works out to about $1.26 a pound – FABULOUS price for roast!
- Fresh 80% lean ground beef is $1.79/lb
- Boneless whole pork loin is $1.97/lb
Dominick’s produce deals:
- Navel oranges are $2.99 for an 8lb bag…
- Green or red seedless grapes are $1.99/lb.
*A note on Dominick’s Super Coupons: All Super Coupons require a total purchase of $10 or more to use. But, the “Minimum $10 purchase” applies to the REGULAR, non-sale price of those items. Really! It’s even spelled out very well on Safeway’s corporate site:
What does “minimum $10 (or $20) purchase required” mean? To use store coupons that include a minimum purchase requirement, you must spend a minimum dollar amount on that shopping trip. You will reach the minimum purchase amount based upon total purchases before your Club Card discount is applied. This total will include the coupon item’s regular price, not the discounted price. For example, the regular retail price of a box of Cheerios (before coupon and before Club Card discounts) will count toward the minimum purchase required in order to use the Cheerios coupon.
So, knowing this, getting over that qualifying dollar amount isn’t as hard as it seems.
At Meijer, let’s get some cheap salsa to go with the cheap chips we picked up at Jewel! Chi-Chi’s Salsa is on sale for .99 a jar. Use the $1-off-2 coupon from 12/6/09 SS and take TWO home for .99… that’s less than .50 a jar! Note that if you shop Jewel first, they also have $1-off-2 Blinkies for Chi-Chis in the aisle.
(As a weird aside, know why Meijer doesn’t have Blinkies? The front edge of their store shelves are not the kind of design that can support mounting the dispensers. Now you know.)
McCormick seasoning packets are a STEAL this week too! On sale for .50 each, you’re going to want to buy 4. Use the $1-off-4 from Meijer Mealbox and stack it with the .25-off-2 from 1/24 RP. With one manufacturer coupon, pay .75 for 4! With two manufacturer coupons, pay .50 for 4, or .13 each!
There’s a good deal going on Stayfree Maxi-Pads (if you haven’t gotten them in a previous week during one of many, many cheap deals on these! Stayfree 16-48ct. pads are on sale Buy 2, Get 1 Free. Use the Buy ONE Get One Free coupon from 1/3 RP, and you’ll pay $3.15 for 1… and get 2 more free! That’s $1.05 each!

- Meijer fresh boneless skinless chicken breast – $1.79/lb
Meijer produce deals:
- Extra-large Avocados are .88 each

- Vine-ripened Roma tomatoes are .99/lb
- Red or green seedless grapes are $1.24/lb
- Tender or white asparagus is $1.99/lb

Note that Meijers in other states are on different schedules. The Illinois Meijers are about a week behind on the sales vs. Indiana/Michigan. If you’re in Illinois, these Meijer deals run through Wednesday. If you’re reading from another state, they ENDED Saturday at your store… Confusing? Yes.
For my Rockford-area shoppers (and Kroger shoppers too!) Hilander has some good deals this week…
If you didn’t get enough 2-liters of pop during last week’s Walgreens and CVS sales, Hilander has yet another deal on Pepsi products. 2-liters of Pepsi are on sale for $1.29 each. Buy 10 (mix and match) and you’ll get an instant savings of .50 on each, bringing them down to just .79 each…
More little cheapies – Kroger buns are .88 and Seyfert Potato Chips are .99 … no coupon needed!

If you prefer the Gillette Venus razors, there’s a fun deal on them too. They’re involved in the same “Buy 2, get $5 gift card” deal as the Fusions are. Now, they won’t be quite as cheap, BUT you’ll be taking some more items home along with these for the same price. Again, you’ll need two sets of inserts to rock this deal. Buy 2 Venus, and also buy 2 Olay Body Wash. Use two $2 off Venus coupons and two “Buy Venus, get Olay Body Wash free coupons. Pay $9.98 and get $5 back – $4.98 for 2 razors and 2 body wash isn’t too bad.

Many readers have reported finding good deals on GE Energy Smart light bulbs at Target. There are a lot of current coupons available for these – 1/3 SS1 has a $1 manufacturer coupon – here’s a printable too. And, the 1/10 SS insert has a $2 Target store coupon, and and Section 1 of the 1/19 Tribune had a $1.50 Target store coupon. Stacked, you’re looking at $2.50-$3 in coupon value toward GE light bulbs — many of which for sell less than that… netting you FREE light bulbs! Many readers have seen 2-packs of these bulbs on clearance in the $2-$3 range too. (Through Feb. 28.)
Reader mjohnson1981 notes that Target’s site also has a $1.50 printable for GE Reveal bulbs… which are currently selling for $1.49. MORE FREE lightbulbs!

And, oh, another surprise… Gillette Fusion razors are ALSO on sale at CVS this week too. They’re $8.99 with $4 in ECBs. Use the $4 coupon from the 2/7 PG, pay $4.99 and get $4 back! Again… taking home this nice, “expensive” razor for just under a buck.
Here’s a fun little deal on Nivea Body Wash and Nivea Lip Care. CVS is running a “Spend $10, get $5 in ECBs” deal on Nivea products. So, buy 1 Body Wash ($5.99) and 2 Lip Care ($2.99 each.) You’re at $11.97, enough to qualify for your $5 in ECBs. Now, let’s use coupons to bring this down even more. With a $2 coupon for the body wash from 1/3 RP and a B1G1F coupon for the Lip Care from 2/7 RP, pay $6.98 and get $5 back! All that for $1.98!
SoyJoy 6-packs snack bars continue to be free after ECB too. They’re on sale for $6 with $6 back in Extra Care Bucks!
The moneymaking deal on Oust air and surface sanitizer continues through 2/14! Oust is on sale for $3.99 a can. For each can you buy, you’ll get $3 back in ECBs, limit 3. Buy 2, use the Buy One, Get One Free Oust coupon from 1/3 SS. Pay $3.99 and get $6 back! Hello there, moneymaker! If you have multiple inserts, buy 4, use 2 coupons, pay $7.98 and get $9 back.
As this has been running for a few weeks now, it seems to be getting a little easier to find on the shelves too…
CVS Tip: Remember to always scan your CVS card at the price scanner in the store — it prints bonus coupons for you!

As always, these deals are guidelines for shopping. I can make no guarantee that these items will be on sale, in stock, or available at your area store. I can also not guarantee your Catalinas will print, your cashier will smile at you while you check out, or that your shopping cart won’t have a broken wheel. But I CAN teach you how to save money :)
And, also, as always, a huge thanks to the many readers who posted and emailed deals that made it into today’s Deals of the Week! We’re all in this together, and I sincerely appreciate everyone who spots and passes along good deals that we can all enjoy :) Thank you… to YOU!
* (All You magazine is not a requirement for using the site, but if you like coupons, you will probably really enjoy it. It’s a cheap ($2.49 an issue) magazine that is absolutely filled with coupons each month — typically $50-$100 worth per issue! You can subscribe to All You online and save about $10/year off the cover price. And depending on the values, if you use 2 or 3 coupons alone from each issue, you’ve recouped the cost of the magazine, and you’re on your way to even bigger savings.)

I haven’t done this yet, but it’s $1.00, get a $1.00 ecb back….now wouldn’t that be cute for your dh??? Or for the kids??

Jill, I oh so HATE to point this out, as time consuming as writing all of this up so thoroughly must be, but I suppose it could throw someone off. Just below that aqua colored box, you say:
Mixing and matching any of the items above to get to a $15 total, (PRE COUPON!) will generate a $5 Catalina at checkout
$15 should be $20 I think
PS- I have been at this a year now and am loving every minute of it! Thanks to you

These were great…had them at the superbowl party last night! They have a very long shelf life on them so…..stocking up on them isn’t a bad idea!

I am reading your weekly colum in the Eagle Tribune(MA)and thought I’d try out your web site. So glad I did! Thanks for all the great tips ~ I have been a couponer/rebater for years.

If anyone is looking for the freezers, the Jewel in New Lenox on Nelson still had 20 or so left yesterday afternoon! The Yorkville, Oswego, and Montgomery Jewels were sold out early Sunday! Hope this helps anyone looking for one! Glad I got mine :D

For those who get canker sores: when asking the pharmacist what my 3YO daughter could safely use for treating them, he said DENTURE ADHESIVE! It’s safe for kids (& adults). It seals the sore, covering the exposed nerve endings, thus ending the pain. Then the sore can heal. Our dentist agreed. So buy up that Poligrip for a money making canker sore treatment!

Hi Jill!
Thanks for all your great work! I thought I’d leave a quick comment on a Kraft cheese promotion going on at Meijer (through Wednesday). Kraft shreds (approximately two cups), crumbles (even small containers of Feta), snacks, blocks, and others, are on sale for 3 for $5 ($1.66/each). If you buy three or more, the cheese becomes 3 for $4 ($1.33/each) after instant store savings (I think it deducted .33/.34 per item)–must buy a minimum of three but doesn’t need to be in multiples of three, so quantity of 4, 6, 8, whatever is fine if you’re looking to combine with manufacturer coupons.
Better yet, when you buy four packages of cheese for $5.32, then apply two $1/two packages of cheese manufacturer coupon (coupons.com) the four packages of cheese become $3.32 (.83/each!!!) Since shredded cheese freezes marvelously, and I have two children who are total cheese heads, I jumped all over this sale.
Hope this is helpful to someone!
Thanks again!

Jill, your scenario gets you to over $25, but this sale only requires you to reach $20. So I didn’t understand why you would buy more items when you already hit the $20 mark. Maybe I missed something, but it made me wonder.
JenniferW says
So the reason this deal will work is because it totals over $20 before the preferred price?
So I just scan the items and then give them my preferred card and hope that after I pay I get a catalina?
maggie says
I was able to get a couple of free cans of WH beans last week, since they were on sale for 99c. I don’t know if they still are, but I know for sure that they are usually not much more expensive.

Want to do the Gillette Venus and Olay Body Wash deal at Wags? Here’s how it works. The Venus also has a $4 RR attached to it. Buy it at $8.99, along with a bottle of Olay Body Wash. Use the $2 Venus coupon and the “Buy Venus, get Free Olay Body Wash” coupons from 2/7 PG, pay $6.99 for both and get $4 back! You’ll pay $2.99 for the razor AND the body wash.
Jbed20 says
The coupon doesn’t state which body wash so I picked up the big one ( Body Quencher) that was $8.79 and got that one instead of the much smaller one that is pictured. It was free. What a great deal.
dancingwolves says
the coupon for the snapple deal was specific for glass bottles six-pack. Does this coupon also go for the 12 pk plastic bottle shown in the Cat deal ad?

Right next to the animal crackers, the “to go” cookies ie oreos, nutter butter, teddy grahams are also $1.00 I bought four with 2Qs and the scanner did not beep.

I’d like to point this out for anyone thinking about working some of the (*Unbelievably amazing & addicting) Alexia snacks into a cat. deal:
The B1G1F is a store SALE price, not a PREFERRED card sale. This means that you cannot count $2.99 for each bag, but for each 2. Quite frankly the “Aged Cheddar” waffle fries are worth the full price to me – usually $2.75-ish at Target, so $1.50 each is completely worth it – even though there aren’t any current coupons out now! I got excited a few months ago when they went on sale for $2.50 @ Target – I bought 4 or 5 bags – $1.50 is really exciting!

In addition to the fusion razor I bought a 12oz bottle of Joy dish detergent for .69. Regular price is 2.29, Walgreen’s insert has a store coupon to buy it for .99 plus PG manufacturer coupon of .30 off in the 2/7 PG = .69!

Love the new site, and all the “jump to” buttons, and short cut tabs are awesome. It is so much easier to move around. This might make me sound a bit lazy, but is it possible to add a “jump to” button to the bottom of the comments, that will take you back to the top? Sometimes the comments for the deals of the week get so long.
Thank you!!

Thank you for the pop corn black belt info – worked like a charm.
The Naperville Jewel only gives $1 back on the 4 bottles of Kraft salad dressings instead of 3. I realized it when I got home so I did not ask. Not sure I can do anything about it now.

So I get the Tribune to get the higher valued coupons, and yet the Dove Body Wash in the 01/31 RP was for $1 off and not $1.25 off…anyone know why? It still is a money maker, but I was still wondering.
Thanks!

Can’t buy the Jewel Baby Basics in quantity – one at a time, FYI, I think my cashier read the coupon after it beeped. I just did another separate transaction, all good.

THAT’S why my second coupon didn’t work! The cashier took it anyway but “warned” me that my coupon may be considered as coupon fraud and to be careful where I print my coupons!

HI JILL, I was wondering why you didn’t post it. I don’t know if it is a good buy, but I want to try it anyway. It sayst in the paper that if you buy $20 worth you get $10 back and they are on sale for 3/10. Do you think if I do that and use 6 $1 coupons that I will be able to get $10 back. Please help.
Bernard2003 says
if – like me – your repeated visits to CVS have been fruitless on the OUST deal. they just can’t seem to keep it in stock. I had a nice conversation with the night MGR at my nearest location and he told me he would give me a rain check because their supplier can’t even keep it in stock in the warehouse right now. He wasn’t sure they would get ANY more in until after 2/14.

The Nabisco animal crackers in the box 10/$10 at Jewel…they were out quickly but don’t fret as the tag said price good until May 9!

I just pulled the Q for my Meijer trip and it looks like it expired 2/7 . . . Is the hope the Meijer will take it only 2 days expired- or is it a dead deal??
Thanks a bunch!!

I’m about 2 months old to super-couponing, and I had to share my latest victory! A while back, I saw a rebate on 10 DecoArt Americana acrylic paints at a Michaels craft store. It was $5 off 10 paints, and I thought, “What would Jill do?” She would wait for a sale. Turns out, the 2 oz. paints are on sale for 77 cents each this week, so I will get them for 27 cents a piece, as opposed to their original price of over $1 each. I don’t know if these rebates are still on the paint aisle in Michaels stores or not, but you might give it a shot! Thanks for your inspiration Jill!
michele_dvorak says
For those of us who are great at super-couponing, but not quite blackbelts, here’s a tip. When shopping for a Cat deal at Jewel, grab an extra item included in the deal, prefereably something cheap. When you go to the register, DO NOT give them your preferred card until after they have scanned all of your deal items. This way you can see exactly what your deal total is. If you are a little under the $25, then you can use that extra item to seal the deal.
wendyzinsli says
Went to Target to get the venus and olay deal like stated in the blog. Was told by the cashier that I couldn’t use both coupons because they are for the same product(razor). I’m new to this… should I just try a different Target? Thanks!
CollegeCouponer says
Kroger has some Nature Valley granola bars (the Dark Chocolate and Nut flavor) that have a peelie on the outside of the box. The peelie says “try me free,” so submit the rebate and get them free! It should tell you a website to go to so you can print the rebate!
