It may be cold outside… but it’s also your day for hot grocery deals, Super-Couponers!
Your word for the week? CLEARANCE. Wherever you’re shopping this week, whether it’s the grocery store, a drugstore or a general merchandise store, keep your eyes open for great clearance items, as many things are being marked down post-holiday and post-year-end. My Forum readers are reporting great clearance buys, like gourmet coffees for $2, $1.39 haircolor clearances and more! I found 8-ounce bottles of vanilla for .99 and 50-count packs of cupcake papers with holly leaves on them… at .05 a package, it will be Christmas around my kitchen… whenever we’re making cupcakes!
This week’s newspaper contained two inserts: one SmartSource and one RedPlum. While that may seem a little light after last week’s New Year’s five-insert-fest, there are still great deals to be had all around Chicagoland … so let’s get started!
(Or, jump directly to comments on this week’s deals…)
If you’re new to the site, take a quick minute to read Using this site and bring yourself up to speed on all the coupon lingo and abbreviations.
It’s a good idea to save the grocery and drugstore flyers from both Wednesday and Sunday each week to have on hand & refer to too as you go through the deals! And, if you’re new to couponing in general, check out my Super-Couponing® website for a list of coupon classes (most are FREE!) and easy instructions on how to start using coupons effectively!
A note to my non-Midwest readers: While my weekly deals focus on Illinois stores, the Target, Walgreens and CVS deals apply nationally. And, if you’re shopping at a SuperValu, Safeway, or Kroger-owned store, you may find similar sales to our Jewel, Dominick’s, and Hilander deals. Welcome, and enjoy!

Grocery Deals
Starting at Jewel, Ivory soap is super cheap! 3-packs of Ivory bars are on sale for $1.11. Use the $1 coupon from 12/27 PG and you’ll take the 3-pack home for the bargain price of .11! That’s under .04 a bar!
Jennie-O turkey hot dogs are super-cheap too. On sale for $1 a package, buy two and use the $1-off-2 coupon from 1/3 SS1 — you’ll take two home for $1, or .50 each! Note that not all Jewel stores stock the turkey dogs, but if yours does… that’s a great price…
Several varieties of Milk Bone dog treats are on sale for $2.49 (bags) – $2.99 (boxes.) Use the $2 coupon from 12/13 RP or printable and your dog will be happily munching on some cheap .49 or .99 treats!
Anytime meat is under $1.99 a pound (no matter what it is — beef, pork, poultry, or seafood) it’s a buy in my book, simply because that’s a cycle low. This week, Jewel has pork shoulder roasts on sale for .99/lb — that’s a GREAT price!
Organic milk deal continues! Stonyfield Farms organic milk half-gallons are on sale for $3.29. Use this .50 printable and get it for $2.79…
AND, if you’re planning a milk stockup (or just buying 2 gallons of any kind of milk) you’ll want to check out this link for a free milk coupon. Register to send a free coupon to a friend, and you’ll get one too — it’s good for a free half-gallon of chocolate milk when you buy 2 gallons of white… and you can print it twice!
Danimals Crush Cups yogurts are marked down to $1.49 at many stores. With the $1 coupon from 1/10 SS, they’re just .49 per 4-pack…
Continuing from last week, Yoplait is also on sale. It’s .40 a cup when you buy 20 (yes, you MUST buy 20. Details of this promo are in the SS 1/3 with the TV ad on front.) But you’ll also get a $2 Catalina at checkout for buying 20… so you’ll ultimately pay just $4.80 for 20, or .24 each!
Here’s where this deal gets better. If you did the Jewel Preferred Card Update promo last year, there’s a .30 off one cup of Yoplait STORE coupon to stack with this. For each coupon you have, that cup will be FREE with .06 overage!
Note though that if you like YoPlus or Fiber One yogurts, you could also get them for FREE with this next deal…

Now…
My black belt couponers know that these deals typically work differently at Jewel than at any other store.
VERY IMPORTANT: If you have never done a high-level Catalina deal at Jewel before, please read this short overview of the way the price structure works. In a nutshell, if you base your dollar-spent mark on the non-Preferred prices, you can save even more money and spend less out of pocket.
If this makes no sense or is the least bit confusing to you… do NOT do the deal in this way. These high-level Catalina deals can be very confusing, especially when you’re new at this. If you are new, use the PREFERRED price only, and you’ll get the Catalina every time. But if you’re a “black belt” couponer and want to maximize your savings… here are some of the best deals. Again, if you use these scenarios and do not get your Catalina, DO NOT go to Customer Service and ask them to make it right for you. You WILL NOT have purchased what the ad states that you must. Again, YOU are taking the risk on these deals. You must be willing to accept ANY outcome without complaining, even if it means not getting any Catalinas at all. An all-yogurt deal Buy 6 YoPlus or Fiber One yogurts Note that AT SOME STORES, the banana/strawberry flavor of YoPlus is on CLEARANCE. Bizarrely, the clearance price is $1.99 – MORE than the sale price. The clearance price can trip up this deal. A yogurt and fruit snack deal Buy 3 YoPlus or Fiber One yogurt Pay $9.05 and get a $5 Catalina and a $3.50 Catalina… all that for just .55! An all-soup deal An all-cereal deal A breakfast, snack, and dinner-side-dish deal Pay $5.56 and get $5 back! That’s a lot of food for .56! REMEMBER… ALWAYS, ALWAYS verify prices at your store at the price-checker BEFORE using the above scenarios. You are using these matchups at YOUR OWN RISK. And remember to roll those Catalinas! Use the $10 you got to help pay for your next round, and so on… |
Over at Dominick’s, Softsoap 7.5 ounce pumps are $1 each. There are numerous expired .35 coupons out for these that will bring them down to just .65 each: 4/26/09 SS, 3/29/09 SS, 2/1/09 SS, or 1/4/09 SS.
CapriSun juice pouches are on sale for $1.99. Use the $1 coupon from 4/19 SS and take a box home for .99…
Dominick’s meat deals:
Fresh split chicken breasts are $1.69/lb.
Rancher’s Reserve beef round steaks are $1.49/lb.
Perdue whole chickens are .79/lb.
There are a few Dominick’s Super Coupons in this week’s flyer too (through 1/10.). Best bets?
16 ox. Lucerne string cheese – $1.99
Safeway rising crust or O Organics pizza – $2.49
(The Safeway pizzas are BIG and look comparable to a DiGiorno… and that’s cheap.)
A note on Dominick’s Super Coupons: All Super Coupons require a total purchase of $20 or more to use. But, the “Minimum $20 purchase” applies to the REGULAR, non-sale price of those items. Really! It’s even spelled out very well on Safeway’s corporate site:
What does “minimum $10 (or $20) purchase required” mean? To use store coupons that include a minimum purchase requirement, you must spend a minimum dollar amount on that shopping trip. You will reach the minimum purchase amount based upon total purchases before your Club Card discount is applied. This total will include the coupon item’s regular price, not the discounted price. For example, the regular retail price of a box of Cheerios (before coupon and before Club Card discounts) will count toward the minimum purchase required in order to use the Cheerios coupon.
So, knowing this, getting over that $20 mark isn’t as hard as it seems.
At Meijer, V8 Splash and V8 Splash Smoothie juices are cheap! One sale for $1.99 a bottle, the price gets better with the $1-off-2 coupon from 1/3 SS2. Buy 2, and you’ll pay about $1.50 a bottle!
The Coffee-Mate continues! Original flavor Coffee-Mate creamer quarts AND 16-ounce flavored Coffee-Mates are both on sale for .99. Use the .50 coupon from 11/1 RP and take either home for .49!
Kibbles n’ Bits dog food is a great buy too this week at Meijer. 16-17.6 pound bags are on sale for $8.99. Use the $2 coupon from 12/6 RP and pay $6.99 for this BIG bag of dog food…
If you didn’t do the Stayfree deals at Wags or CVS last week, Stayfree is cheap at Meijer this week too. They’re on sale for $2.50 a pack. Use the B1G1F coupon from 1/3 RP and take two home for $2.50, or $1.25 a package…
Along the same lines, if you couldn’t find Electrasol/Finish diswasher detergent last week at Walgreens when it was super-cheap, it’s still a great buy this week at Meijer. It’s on sale for $3.49. With the $2.50 coupon from 1/3 SS, you’ll pay .99!
Meijer meat deals:
Pork bone-in Western style ribs is on sale for $0.99/lb.
Grade A boneless skinless chicken breasts are $1.79/lb…
Note that Meijers in other states are on different schedules. The Illinois Meijers are about a week behind on the sales vs. Indiana/Michigan. If you’re in Illinois, these Meijer deals run through Wednesday. If you’re reading from another state, they ENDED Saturday at your store… Confusing? Yes.
For my Rockford-area readers, Hilander has some good deals this week too…
Isn’t it funny how the same categories of products tend to cycle in sale around the same time? Jewel’s got crazy yogurt deals going, and Hilander has a good one too. Dannon Activia and Danimals yogurt 4-packs are on sale for $1.88. Use the $1 coupons from 1/10 SS and take these home for .88 each, or .22 a cup! Anytime yogurt is under a quarter a cup — any brand — it’s a good buy.
Horizon organic milk is on sale too. It’s $2.99 a carton. Use this $1 coupon and take it home for $1.99 – a great price!
Mini coupon lesson:
In my Super-Couponing classes, one of the things I teach is that smaller sizes of products are often our best deals as coupon shoppers — especially on items that take refills. With regard to razors, plug-in air fresheners, pump soaps — it’s almost always cheaper to just buy another one (with a coupon!) than to buy the refill for the one you have.
Along those lines, here’s a great deal on Softsoap pumps. They’re on sale for $1 this week at Hilander, and there’s a .35 coupon in the 1/3 SS. This will double to .70 off, and you’ll take home your Softsoaps for just .30 each!
Continuing YET again this week, Kroger 1/2 gallons milk are on sale for $1.25 each. These buy 2 gallons, get chocolate milk free coupons will work well here. If you’re buying 2 gallons of milk (4 half-gallons,) use the $1 off chocolate milk coupon to get a 1/2 gallon of chocolate for a quarter!
Off to Target… which incidentally is THE place to be for after-Christmas toy clearance! Toys have dropped to the 50% mark at most stores, and they will typically go to 75% off within the next week or two. But, this is still a great time to shop — half off is fabulous… just keep your eyes open for the next drop very soon. I do almost all of my Christmas shopping for NEXT Christmas (2010) during these next couple of weeks!
Post-Christmas is also a great time to buy gift sets (think bath and body products, colognes, perfumes) as they’re reduced significantly after the holiday. Here’s a deal on Axe gift sets. The gift sets are marked down to $5 each. For every 2 you buy, you’ll get a $5 gift card. So, buying 2 essentially makes the second free – you pay $5 for both.
There are no current insert coupons for Axe, but here’s a printable for $1 off Axe shower gel. If you get two sets with shower gel and use 2 coupons, taking the gift card into account, you could end up paying $3 for both, or $1.50 each! I believe the $5 gift card deal runs through early February.
Drugstore Deals
Heading to Walgreens, here’s a deal that will net you some FREE Triaminic! Triaminic products are on a Register Rewards deal — buy 2 at $5 each and get $5 in RRs. So, buy one Triaminic cold product and one Triaminic Thin Strips. Use the $2 and $3 Triaminic coupons from 12/6 SS. Pay $5 and get $5 back in RRs! FREE Triaminic!
Oust air and surface sanitizer is FREE with a coupon deal. Oust is on sale Buy One, Get One Free. Use the Buy One, Get One Free Oust coupon from 1/3 SS and get TWO for free!
Colgate MaxWhite and MaxFresh toothpastes are CHEAP too! Both varieties are on sale for $2.99 with a $2 RR. Use the .75 coupon from 1/3 SS, pay $2.24 and get $2 back. .24 Colgate? Not bad! But if you get All You magazine, it’s even better… use the $1 coupon in January’s issue to get it FREE! Thanks to Lizmw in our Forum for the All You tip!
Thermacare heat wraps are FREE after Register Rewards too. Buy one at $2.49 and get $2.49 in RRs!
Quaker Quick oatmeal is $1.50 with the store coupon in the Walgreens ad. Stack it with this $1 manufacturer coupon and take it home for .50!
.49 sales! The following items are just .49 each after coupon…
Betty Crocker frosting tubs are on sale for .99 with the store coupon in the Walgreens flyer. Stack it with this .50 printable and pay just .49 … and you can print 2!
Betty Crocker Warm Delights are also on sale for .99 with the store coupon in Wags’ flyer. Stack it with .50 printables from here and/or here and pay just .49… between the two sites, you can print 4 manufacturer coupons.
Halls cough drops (see a theme here?) are ALSO .99 with the coupon in Wag’s weekly flyer. Stack it with the .50 coupon from 1/10 SS or a printable and pay… just .49!
Lastly, many Forum readers are reporting super-cheap haircolor clearances at Walgreens. Clip coupons for your favorite brands (use the Coupon Lookup in the links at right to find your coupons!) and good luck bargain-hunting!
And finally, over at CVS, the good deal on Oust air and surface sanitizer continues. Oust is on sale for $3.99 a can. For each can you buy, you’ll get $3 back in ECBs, limit 3. Buy 2, use the Buy One, Get One Free Oust coupon from 1/3 SS. Pay $3.99 and get $6 back! Hello there, moneymaker! If you have multiple inserts, buy 4, use 2 coupons, pay $7.98 and get $9 back.
SoyJoy 6-packs snack bars are free after ECB too. They’re on sale for $6 with $6 back in Extra Care Bucks!

As always, these deals are guidelines for shopping. I can make no guarantee that these items will be on sale, in stock, or available at your area store. I can also not guarantee your Catalinas will print, your cashier will smile at you while you check out, or that your shopping cart won’t have a broken wheel. But I CAN teach you how to save money :)
* (All You magazine is not a requirement for using the site, but if you like coupons, you will probably really enjoy it. It’s a cheap ($2.49 an issue) magazine that is absolutely filled with coupons each month — typically $50-$100 worth per issue! You can subscribe to All You online and save about $10/year off the cover price. And depending on the values, if you use 2 or 3 coupons alone from each issue, you’ve recouped the cost of the magazine, and you’re on your way to even bigger savings.)

New to the site and had a quick question. Where is the advertised about the Jewel offer for the $3.50 Catalina on Nature Valley and the GM fruit snacks. This seems like a great deal but new to couponing and was nervous that I didn’t see this in the ad? Any help would be great. Thanks!

Thank you so much! I am going to the class on 1/30 in Lake in the Hills. Can’t wait! I was planning on going to Jewel shopping tonight anyway. This just makes it even better.

I did a black belt deal and did not even know it ;-) I did a bad thing and was not organized this morning with my coupons. So I was trying to figure out a fiber one yogurt deal with the fiber one bars.Somehow I thought I would get four boxes of bars and four yogurts and it would equal to 20.00.Well it did not.My total without coupons came to 16.24.Then after coupons it was 10.44.I thought I had messed up and would not get a cat.But I did!So here is what I did.
4-fiber one yogurts(3.35-1.85 preferred savings)
4-fiber one bars (3.49-1.00 preferred savings)
My total again without coupons was 16.24(.28 tax)
I had four coupons for 1.00 off each box of yogurt
two .40 off fiber one bars and one 1.00 of two boxes.
My total with coupons was 10.44 and I recieved a 5.00 cat.Pretty sweet deal.

I totally credit you for starting me on my way into the world of couponing. And I know beggars cannot be choosers. But I was wondering if you’d ever consider instead of posting EVERYTHING (which I imagine can be overwhelming at times, especially on weeks with a lot of great sales) on one day, posting the Jewel and Meijer deals any earlier? By the time you post them, there’s only about 48 hours to get ready set and go!! Now I KNOW I should be satisfied with what you offer (which is a lot!!) But man, it would be incredibly more awesome if I could see the deals a lot sooner. I am not so good at this and my sn son has therapies almost all day on Tuesdays, so that reduces my organizing and shopping time.
Just thought I would ask. And if not, thanks for all the deals you do post!!
