Happy Independence Day, Super-Couponers! I hope that everyone’s enjoying celebrating the July 4th holiday with friends and family. We spent a gorgeous Sunday at the Brookfield Zoo thanks to Meijer’s super deal on free zoo tickets this spring! Today’s plans include sunshine, gardening, and grilling… can’t wait to fire up the grill and enjoy the bargain seafood and meats that we picked up over with all of the deals running (hint… there’s a $10-off-$50 grocery coupon that will drop already-great prices even more!)
If you’re a weekly Chicago Tribune subscriber (or just grab it on the newsstand!) today’s Chicago Tribune has a very lengthy profile of me and my rise from mom to “Coupon Superstar,” which you can read online too. While I’ve done a lot of “how to save with coupons” media pieces, this is the first time that someone’s written a full story about how I got to be “Jill Cataldo of Super-Couponing.” For those who’ve ever wondered how I got here… the story’s now been told! I’ll also join the WGN Morning News crew again in Chicago this week (July 5th, around 8:30am) to talk coupons. Tune in tomorrow on Channel 9!
Now, it’s time for Deals of the Week once again. I’ve got all the best supermarket and drugstore deals of the week written just for you… all in one place, on one page! As always, grab your scissors and coupon inserts, and get ready to start clipping this week, as bunches of bargains and freebies are heading your way!
This week’s newspaper contained one coupon insert: Procter & Gamble (PG.) This is normal due to the 4th of July holiday. (Normally we’d have no inserts on a holiday weekend, but because P&G usually comes out at the beginning of a new month, we got it.)

“Deals of the Week” is written assuming you are using the inserts from the Chicago Tribune (or, if reading from outside Chicagoland, the largest newspaper serving your market area. That largest paper has the most, highest-value coupons. The content, coupons, and dollar amounts of the coupons in the RedPlum and SmartSource inserts differs by paper, so to coupon effectively, you do need to be getting the paper with the “best,” highest-value coupons.)

Deals continuing from previous weeks:
(There are so many of last week’s great deals that are still running (or got better!) so make sure you read through in case you missed any of these last week!)

Coca-Cola product 12-packs are on sale at Jewel 4-for-$8. You must buy 4 with a separate $20 grocery transaction to get the 4-for-$8 pricing. The Minute Maid 12-packs are also part of a national Catalina sale – buy 4 or more and get a $3 Catalina.

The weekly Jewel ad has a coupon for 1-cent Hillshire Farm smoked sausage, S. Rosen’s buns and Plochman’s yellow mustard when you buy a $12.99 24-pack of Miller Lite. If you’re buying the beer anyway, it’s worth spending a penny for all of these bonus items.

Hiland Folding Camp Chairs (those canvas kind with the armrests and legs that fold up into a vertical bag) are $7.49 each. (Wal-Mart and Meijer’s ads both have these for $9.88 each this week, so this is a better price if you’re looking for these. Walgreens has them just a bit cheaper this week at $6.99, but theirs don’t have armrests for that price.)
“No Coupon Needed” Deals:
250ct. packages of Homelife Everyday Napkins are $1.99 each.
12ct. packages of Jewel jumbo hamburger buns are $1.99.
Jewel-Osco information:
Jewel-Osco has a Facebook page. If you have questions directly for corporate, you can ask them there.
Are you on the Jewel-Osco email list? Jewel regularly sends out coupons to match with their current sales, and often they’re store coupons that can be stacked with manufacturer coupons!
Coupon books currently found at Jewel:
Celebrate Summertime Fun – coupons for beef, alcohol, and a nice $2 off any Culinary Circle Artisan bread coupon
Fresh Summertime Fun – Blue book with more summertime food coupons
Smuckers Ice Cream – has ice cream topping coupons for $1.25 off and B3G4th Free
Fresh & Fun Celebration – Small book with coupons for $2 off any 1lb. or larger Stockman & Dakota Premium Angus Beef package; $2 off any 1 to 2lb. bag of Arctic Shores shrimp, and $2 off any Hormel Party Tray (all expire 7/15/11.)
Jewel meat deals:
- Perdue fresh chicken drumsticks or thighs are $1.69/lb.
- Hormel Always Tender pork country style ribs are $2.69/lb., but there’s a $1 coupon in the 5/8 SS that will drop the per-pound price a little more.
Jewel seafood deals:
- Swai fillets are $3.99/lb.
Jewel produce deals:
- Nectarines and peaches are .98/lb.
- Vidalia onions are .99/lb.
- 1lb. containers of strawberries are $1.48, limit 3
- Eggplant, yellow squash and zucchini are all $1.49/lb.
- Sweet corn is .22 an ear, limit 12
- Mangoes are .99 each
- Whole seedless watermelons (13-17lb.) are $2.98 each, limit 1
(Anytime meat is under $2 a pound (no matter what it is — beef, pork, poultry) it’s a buy in my book, because $2 is a cycle low and a good benchmark for meat prices — ditto for most produce. Seafood, by its nature, is more expensive per pound, but a good “buy” benchmark is $4 per pound or less.)
Let’s go to Dominick’s (View weekly ad)…
Note to Safeway shoppers reading from outside Chicagoland: In Chicago, Dominick’s does not double coupons (as other Safeway stores do) – if your store doubles, you’ll do even better with many of these deals. Also, in Chicago, support for previously-available ecoupons (Cellfire, ShortCuts and PGEsaver) have been discontinued. Ecoupons are now available in the “Just For U / Coupon Center” section of electronic coupons available at Dominicks.com.
Dominick’s Super Coupons:
These are store coupons found in the weekly Dominick’s flyer, which (in the case of the name-brand products) means they can be stacked with manufacturer coupons for even bigger savings. You can also load some of these Super Coupons to your Fresh Values card via Dominicks.com and not have to clip them. Best bets this week?
In the June 29th issue of the Chicago Tribune newspaper – page 9 of “Good Eating” section:
- There is a $10 off $50 coupon at the top of the page that is valid through 7/6. Definitely grab this if you got it, as there are some great deals this week that you can work it into…
- King’s Hawaiian Sandwich Buns or Dinner Rolls are $1.88 each with Super Coupon through 7/6. Use the $1 off Sandwich Buns from the 5/22 SS and pay .88! There’s a .50 coupon for these in the June All You for more $1.38 buns. Or, buy two packages of Hawaiian rolls and use the $1-off-2 from the 6/26 RP. Pay $2.76 for two, or $1.38 per package! GREAT prices for both.
- 3-pound packages of Safeway Thick Sliced Bacon are $6.99 each, limit 2, with Super Coupon through 7/6. That’s $2.33/lb., a good price for bacon… and we really like this kind. It cooks up nice and thick and has a good flavor – one of my favorite things I’ve discovered at Dominick’s this year.
- 18ct. Lucerne Eggs are $1.99 each, limit 2, with Super Coupon through 7/6.
- 2lb. bags of Waterfront Bistro Medium Raw Shrimp are $7.98 each, limit 5, with Super Coupon through 7/6. That’s $3.99/lb., a very good per-pound price for shrimp.

- Dial 32-52oz. Hand Soap Refills are $2.99 each, limit 4, with Super Coupon. If you go for the largest bottle here, it’s a good price if you’re in need of this. (It is oddly rare to see deals on pump soap refills. The 7.5oz. Dial pump soaps often go on sale for $1, so do the math here if you get 52 ounces… :)
- Lysol Disinfectant Wipes or All-Purpose Cleaners (35ct. wipes, 22-32oz. sprays) are $1.69 each, limit 4, with Super Coupon. Use the $1-off-2 coupons for wipes or cleaner from 6/12 SS. Buy two and pay $2.38 for two, or $1.19 each. This is especially a good price for the wipes.

8oz. bags of Wonderful Pistachios are $4.99, Buy One Get One Free. If you hung onto the $1 coupons in the 3/17/11 issue of the Jewel Spotlight (in-store magazine that had a $1 coupon for this on the cover that week!) use one here. Pay $3.99 for two, or about $2 per bag.
The 6/26 SS has a $1-off-2, but remember that Dominick’s will not allow a coupon to be applied to the free bag. If you wish to use this coupon, you’ll actually have to buy four bags, which isn’t as good a deal.
Here’s a little ice cream deal that you can do if you’ve got an ecoupon for $1 off Safeway Select 1.5qt. Ice Cream to load to your Fresh Values card at Dominicks.com. (I do not know if this ecoupon is available to everyone, but it was available to load when I logged in.) Safeway Select 1.5qts. are on sale for $3.49. Use the $1-off-2 Breyers in the home-mailed version of the Jewel Summertime Fun coupon book (blue cover) and pay $3.98 for two, or $1.99 each! (Again, the Breyers coupon is only in the home-mailed version of the blue Jewel Summertime coupon book –the one in the store does not have it.)
If you’re on Jewel-Osco’s email list, they sent out a $1.25 off 3 printable. Buy three, and with this coupon you’ll pay $6.22 for three, or about $2.07 per carton – again, a decent price.
Deals continuing from previous weeks:
If you have any free 12-pack of Coca-Cola coupons from Coke Rewards, this might be a good week to use them. Dominick’s has Coca-Cola 12-packs on sale Buy 2, Get 3 FREE.
Note that during this sale, Doms tends to jack the price up on their 12-packs (a ridiculous $5.99 each) and the Coke Rewards coupons are usually good up to $4.99. With 2 coupons, expect to pay that $1 difference between the Coke’s price and the coupon. Still, $2 for 5 12-packs isn’t bad!
Dominick’s is running a “Buy 4, Save $4” sale on a variety of cereals. The Kellogg’s prices are in this week’s ad, and they are:

32oz. packages of Pilgrim’s Pride Southern Style battered chicken strips are $4.49 – that’s about $2.50/lb., which is not a bad price if you need them.
Slip ‘n Slide Surf Rider 16-foot waterslides are $5.

If you’re in Illinois, these Meijer deals run through Wednesday. If you’re reading from another state, they ENDED Saturday at your store… Confusing? Yes.
AND, if you shop at the Illinois NILES or ORLAND Meijer locations, they typically haven’t been following the same sale flyer as the other Illinois Meijers.
Here are your Hilander and Kroger deals (View weekly Hilander ad) …
Nabisco Snack Crackers (Wheat Thins, Triscuits) are $1.99 a box. Buy two and use the $1-off-2 from 6/19 SS. You’ll pay $2.98 for two, or $1.49 per box!

Want more FREE pasta? Creamette pasta is on sale for $1 too. Use the .50 coupon from 6/19 SS, which doubles to $1, and it’s FREE too!
8oz. bags of Wonderful Pistachios are $2.99 each. Buy two and use the $1-off-2 coupon from 6/26 SS. You’ll pay $4.98 for two, or $2.49 each! If by chance you are on that edge of being both a Jewel and a Hilander shopper, as I am on occasion, you might also have the $1 coupons in the 3/17/11 issue of the Jewel Spotlight (in-store magazine that had a $1 coupon for this on the cover that week!) With these, pay $1.99 per bag!
Mt. Olive Pickles are on sale for $1.69. Use the .50 coupon from 6/26 SS, which doubles to $1, and pay .69!
Hilander’s running a big “Buy 10, Save $3” sale as well this week. Honestly, I’m not seeing anything super-stellar here, and this being a holiday weekend… I’m going to pass on doing a full breakout. The Totinos Party Pizzas and Pizza Rolls aren’t bad prices here – .99 each when you buy 10. The 4/17 SS1 has coupons for .40 off 2 Pizza Rolls and .50 off three Party Pizzas. Both of these will double, so .80 off two Pizza Rolls puts you at $1.18 for two, or .59 a box. Buying three Party Pizzas for .99 each with the .50-off-3 doubled to $1 leaves you at $1.97 for three, or .66 per pizza!
“No Coupon Needed” deals:
Kroger bread and buns are $1 each.
64oz. cartons of Minute Maid Fruit Punch or Lemonade are $1 each.
12-packs of Coke, Pepsi or 7-Up are 4-for-$10, or $2.50 each. You must buy 4 to receive this price.

Remember that Hilander doubles coupons up to .55 face value every day! You are only allowed to double two of the SAME coupon per day though — additional coupons will ring at face value. (Split your trips if you’re stocking up!)
Readers outside Illinois will want to check with their local Kroger or Kroger-affiliated stores to determine how they handle coupon doubling.

CVS is again running a gas card promotion that will run for the next few weeks. Spend $30 on selected items in the ad and get a $10 gas card. You do NOT have to purchase all $30 in the same shopping trip, but you DO have to purchase $30 worth in this particular calendar week — it will not carry over to next week. Your CVS Extra Care Card will track the $30 for you.
CVS Tip: Remember to always scan your CVS card at the Coupon Center scanner in the store — it prints bonus coupons for you!

Wrapping things up with Walmart…
“No Coupon Needed” Deals:
8lb. packages of Great Value 100% Beef Burgers (32ct.) are $16.98 – that’s about $2.12/lb.
Super Walmart meat deals:
- Fresh boneless skinless chicken breasts are $1.88/lb.
- Pork spare ribs are $1.98/lb.
Super Walmart produce deals:
- Yellow peaches are .88/lb.
- 24oz (2 pint) containers of blueberries are $3.78.
- Sweet corn is .20 an ear
Policies to know:
- Walmart will price match any competitor’s advertised price. Bring the other store’s flyers with you to the store.
- With the new coupon policy, Walmart will also accept other store’s STORE coupons with an actual price listed on them. For example, a Dominick’s store coupon advertising “.99 Ragu Pasta Sauce” would be accepted. A Walgreens store coupon advertising “2/$1 Morton’s Salt” would be accepted. (A Target store coupon for “$2.50 off Huggies” would not, because it does not show the actual selling price of the item.)
- With the new coupon policy, Walmart will also accept competitor’s Catalina manufacturer coupons. You can get a Catalina for $1 off Snuggle and use it at Walmart.
- Walmart’s new coupon policy specifically addresses coupon overage. It says “Coupons may exceed the price of the item. Change may be given or applied toward the cost of the basket purchase.” I have heard from one reader who used a $3 Register Reward on a $2.49 copy of All You magazine and DID receive change, in cash.
I would print a copy and carry a copy of the coupon policy with you if you anticipate any issues.
Will I blog Walmart in its entirety each week?
I will not be blogging entire writeups for Walmart each week. Every store location’s regular prices are different, and Walmart does not issue a weekly ad every week. I’ve listed Walmart at the end of each week’s Deals writeup, because if you see any deals above that you want, you’ll likely also be able to do them at Walmart.
However, if there IS an ad with noteworthy sales or I’m aware of great coupon matchups, you’ll find those here too.

As always, these deals are guidelines for shopping. I can make no guarantee that these items will be on sale, in stock, or available at your area store. I can also not guarantee your Catalinas will print, your cashier will smile at you while you check out, or that your shopping cart won’t have a broken wheel. But I CAN teach you how to save money :)
And, also, as always, a huge thanks to the many readers who posted and emailed deals that made it into today’s Deals of the Week! We’re all in this together, and I sincerely appreciate everyone who spots and passes along good deals that we can all enjoy :) Thank you… to YOU!
* All You magazine: If you like coupons, you will probably really enjoy it. It’s an inexpensive magazine ($2.49 an issue) that is absolutely filled with coupons each month — typically $50-$100 worth per issue! Subscribing via the pink banner on the right drops the price to $1.67 per issue. Depending on the values, if you use 2 or 3 coupons alone from each issue, you’ve recouped the cost of the magazine, and you’re on your way to even bigger savings.)

Jill, what zip code do you use for coupons.com? The coupons never seem to be there for me when I go – I know they run out fast sometimes but I think I also don’t use the right zip. Thanks for posting and have a great holiday – sending good computer karma your way!

The American Pie on sale at Dominicks for $2.99 that I bought the other day had a coupon attached for $1 off the pie if you buy a Cool Whip. The Cool Whip was on sale for $1.25, so with the coupon I got it for a net of $.25, making the deal a little ‘sweeter’.

Can you do this more than once in a single transaction and still get all the cats? I would like to buy the 4 thins and also 4 of the bars. I need all of the items to get over $20 in purchases to get the Minutemaid deal too. Thanks

I have a few questions about this weeks Jewel deals.
1. On the buy 10 save $5 deal Green Giant canned vegetables were part of that deal. Is that no longer the case?
2. On the buy 4 receive $5.00 cat I saw in my store the Fiber One bars had the tags as well. Are they not included?
3. Last question, for the Itunes deal scenario you listed for the Oral B I could have sworn last night you said to use 5 of each coupon but now it says 4. Is there something wrong with using 5?
Sorry for all the questions but I want to get this right.
Happy 4th!!

Just a heads up …
I bought 4 Coke products (2 Diet CF Coke and 2 Mello Yello) at Jewel in McHenry on Friday. I tried to use both the “$2 off 2” and the “free slim 8-pk with purchase of 3”, but was not allowed. The cashier said that I would have to buy 5 12-pks in order to use both coupons, because it would be using two coupons against the same item. Anyone else have this problem?
In better news, though … I bought 4 Pillsbury brownie mixes (along with some other items included in the deal) and had 4 $0.55 printable coupons (thanks to multiple computers and a couple family members willing to print them for me!), and Jewel gave the “overage” of $0.06 per coupon. I think the reason it worked is because the mixes are still ringing at $0.99, not $0.49. When you do the “Buy 10, get $5” deal, it takes off the $5 as a line-item at the end of the transaction, not on each individual item. Just thought I’d share that. :-)

I was looking yesterday and was unable to find the Pillsbury printable q on coupons.com. Has anyone else found it or did it hit its print limit?

When I returned home from my shopping trip to Dominick’s, the Dial refill bottle that I purchased had fallen over in my reuseable bag and the cap had come off. What a mess! By the time I noticed it, there was a big soapy puddle on my wood floor. I immediately returned the bottle and a very soap-soaked bag to the store. They gladly exchanged it for a new bottle and even gave me a new Dominick’s reuseable bag(the really nice one)to replace mine. They were very apologetic and very kind. Thank you Dominick’s! Just check those bottle caps to make sure they’re tight.

Hey Jill & everybody!
Jewel’s Avenu program has been giving us a massive headache for the last 3 months. The coupons available haven’t changed!!! We can’t understand why and we’re getting frustrated when we see your deals of the week and other match-up sites stating that their may be new coupons available. Are we doing something wrong on their website? Do have to e-mail Jewel corporate and insist that they update their coupon selection? Has anybody else been having this problem?

I can’t seem to find the super coupon for the hawaiian bread. the store had two flyers and couldn’t find it for the life of me. What am I missing?
Thanks in advance!
Hope everyone had a good 4th!

purchased ten bottles of Pantene and it didn’t print an iTunes Cat. CSR figured it out that one of the bottles had 25% more than the original bottles. She redid it by using a regular size bottle so I could get an iTunes CAT.
It pays to be friendly and considerate even if deals don’t go through as planned. This CSR went out of her way to make it work without me even saying anything other than I wondered why it didn’t work.
I normally don’t do these type of CAT deals either but received an iPod for xmas and with running outside I’m just more inspired with music to listen to. Plus hate paying for a CD when I only like four out of 15 songs. It helps that my daughter and I are out of shampoo. So thanks Jill for letting me know about this deal as been traveling lately and haven’t had time to review ads as closely as I would like.

The Elgin Meijer has a huge box of backpacks that were leftovers from last year’s back to school. The store never sold them and is unable now to return them. They are already on clearance and are an additional 75% of the clearance price. I picked up 3 backpacks for my kids for $7! They are located in the back of the store near the cameras.

I went to Target today to get the pantene shampoo that was on sale. But I found a slightly smaller bottle 12.6 on sale for $3.79. Now, a few weeks ago I stocked up on Dove shampoo so I was happy getting the smaller bottle.
Using the SS 6/19 $3.00 off 2 bottles, so I got the two bottles for $2.29 each.

I tried to do this week’s toothbrush deal at CVS with the BOGO coupon from the June PG and the $2 off coupon from the July PG, but the register beeped and the cashier said it counted as two coupons on the same item.
I thought that the BOGO coupon applied to toothbrush #2, making it free, but I was still purchasing toothbrush #1, and the $2 off coupon applied to it, making it $1. I don’t really understand. Can anyone clarify for me?

Jewel Avenu added some Healthy Choice Fresh Mixers to my card ($1.25 off) and today I went to buy some items that I needed. I found the HC mixers and one dish was on clearance for $1.99 (penne roasted pepper alfredo) and I bought two and paid only $.74 for each one!!! Not sure if all the Jewels have them on clearance as well.

I know what you mean about Jewel’s Avenu! The offers on it have hardly changed since I joined. I think it ads one new item each month or so.
scrimper says
Your deal for 20# of Kingsford at Meijer ($4.50/bg) refers to a manufacturers coupon from a Jewel flyer. I think I had that coupon and it said “redeem at Jewel”. Was that just misdirection on Jewel’s part? It’s valid at Meijer?

I’ve only been couponing for a few weeks now and have a question on the CVS raincheck policy for their sale items. My local CVS store was sold out of the Cascade dishwasher detergent that is on sale this week for $2.99. I asked for a raincheck and was told by the cashier who seemed very flustered that he can’t give me a raincheck because there is no offer/promotion code underneath the item on the sales ad. Does that sound right?
couponingman says
Are you allowed to use Wags RR at Jewel since they are manufacturer coupons?
fabbyk31 says
Yes, you can use Walgreens Register Rewards at Jewel if it says “redeemable” since it is a manufactures coupon it can be redeemed at Jewel. I had a cashier question me the other day and she had to call the service desk and they told her that yes. I guess I was her first customer with Walgreens register rewards.
