Hello, Super-Couponers! Hope you’re ready to save lots of GREEN this week! A big congratulations to NewToQs, winner of our Shrek-Tacular Savings Prize Pack! Her prize pack included this $10 General Mills coupon book… which you should keep your eyes open for too, as they’re appearing at local grocery stores as well. Many readers have spotted them at Dominick’s, and the coupons inside work nicely with the General Mills Catalina running at Jewel this week.
A big welcome to our readers from my Willowbrook, Alsip, St. Charles, Channahon, and Frankfort classes this past week! (Whew! It was a marathon week of teaching for me!)
This week’s newspaper contained TWO inserts: SmartSource and RedPlum.

Deals continuing from previous weeks:
2010 FREEZER DEAL: The remaining coupons in the freezer deal are EXPIRING May 31. Deans Churn Ice Cream tubs are also still B1G1F through May 19th! Get two free! Same for the McCain’s Frozen Potatoes – also B1G1F through May 19th so get TWO free.
It’s also time though to start clearing room in your freezers to bring home the rest of any food that has not yet gone on sale Buy One, Get One Free since the deal began.
(Yes, we saw a shorter duration of time [Feb-May] to use these coupons up than in years’ past freezer deals… but it’s still the cheapest way to get a chest freezer. Many people have written to ask if they should let these coupons expire and use them at Dominick’s — I would NOT do this. Dominick’s policy on accepting expireds could change at ANY time. Better to get the free food than risk losing it completely.)
We’ve been keeping track of the B1G1F sales for the freezer coupons in this Forum discussion.
If you’re a fan of Jewel’s Wild Harvest line of organics, here’s your chance to take some home cheap or FREE! Print this $1 off any Wild Harvest coupon and look around the store — there are MANY Wild Harvest products that sell for $1, or close to it.
This week’s best bets?
Wild Harvest reusable shopping bags – .99 – free with coupon
Wild Harvest canned beans – $1.29 at most stores – .29 with coupon
Jewel’s house brand of diapers, Baby Basics, are a good buy with coupons! Jumbo packs are $7.99 each. Use these $4 printables here and here and cut that price in half… to $3.99 a jumbo pack of diapers! Jewel also has the value pack (cardboard case) of diapers on sale for $16.99 – with coupon, it’s $12.99.
Jewel meat deals:
- Perdue chicken wings are $1.48/lb.
- Jewel chicken drumsticks or thighs are $1.49/lb.
(Anytime meat is under $1.99 a pound (no matter what it is — beef, pork, poultry, or seafood) it’s a buy in my book, because $1.99 is a cycle low and a good benchmark for meat prices.)
Jewel produce deals:
- Baking potatoes are .49/lb
- Vidalia onions are .99/lb
- Farm Stand 1lb. bags of baby-cut carrots are .99
- Red seedless grapes are .98/lb.
- Zucchini or yellow squash are $1.49/lb.
- Fresh green beans are $1.49/lb.
- Red or Klondike Goldust potatoes are $1.99/lb.
- 2lb. packages of strawberries are $4.99 – that’s $2.50/lb.
Note to my Safeway shoppers reading from outside Chicagoland: In Chicago, Dominick’s currently accepts expired coupons up to one year past the expiration date, so my coupon matchups for Dominick’s deals will include expired coupons. If an expired coupon matchup is provided, it will be noted with (exp) after the date. Also, in Chicago, Dominick’s does not double coupons (as other Safeway stores do) – if your store doubles, you’ll do even better with many of these deals.
Dominick’s is running a “Buy 4, save $4” sale on cereals! While there are many cereals included in the deal, your best bests here are going to be the Quaker Life and the Kellogg’s Corn Flakes. Both are $1 each when purchased in quantities of 4 at a time.
There are some good coupons out for these:
Quaker Life
$3 off 5 – current tearpads in stores
Kellogg’s Corn Flakes:
– $1 off – 11/8/09 RP (exp), December ’09 All You (exp)
– $1.50 off 2 – 3/29 RP (exp)
– $1 off 2 – 4/11 RP, 1/10 RP (exp), 12/13/09 RP (exp)
https://www2.kelloggs.com/Product/KelloggCoupon.aspx?id=1992
To do the Life deal, with four tearpad coupons, buy 20 (!) boxes and pay $8 for 20 boxes of Life – that’s .40 a box! (Dominick’s, I HOPE you stock lots of Life this week.)
With 2 $1.50-off-2 coupons, pay $1 for 4 Corn Flakes, or a quarter a box! With four $1 coupons… you do the math :)
Here’s a great deal on Classico pasta sauce and pasta! Classico is on sale for $2 a jar. When you buy 2 Classico, you’ll get 2 free boxes of Safeway pasta (12-16oz.) Already a nice deal! But… here come the coupons!
Buy One, Get One Free – 1/10 SS (exp)
Buy 2 Classico, save $1.50 on Beef – 3/14 SS (exp)
NOTE: The $1.50 coupons in 4/25 SS, 1/10 SS (exp) are for the 44 OUNCE jar, not the 15. (Yes, they would have been fun to work into the deal, but they’re for the wrong size.)
Won’t this be fun?
Here’s one way to work the deal – buy 2 jars, use the B1G1F coupon and pay $2 for 2 jars of pasta sauce AND 2 boxes of pasta.
Or… buy 2 jars, use the B1G1F coupon AND the $1.50 off beef when you buy Classico. (You could buy $1.50 worth of deli sliced beef, or any beef you’d like!)
Note that the LAST time Dominick’s ran this deal, no matter how many jars of sauce you bought in one transaction, you only got TWO boxes of pasta free. So, split these up into separate transactions as you don’t want to miss out on free pasta!
Also note that some Dominick’s have issues with allowing both a money-off coupon and a B1G1F coupon on two items. It IS correct usage (the $1.50 coupon applies to the first jar, and the B1G1F to the second) but regardless… this is some CHEAP pasta and sauce!
A little non-coupon deal: Cloverhill 4-packs of honey buns and danish are just .99. (I have to confess, these jumped out at me as a deal because a lonnnng time ago, in my college years, I’d buy these before class from a vending machine for .50 each. Oh, if I had been a smarter shopper then..!)
As usual, there are some Dominick’s Super Coupons* in this week’s ads too. Best bets?
- Dannon Activia yogurt (if you DIDN’T get enough of it free last month at Jewel!) It’s $1.99 with Super Coupon, limit 4. Use any of many $1 coupons to take the 4-pack home for .99! (Coupons: 5/2 SS, 3/28 SS2 (exp), 2/28 SS (exp), 2/7 SS (exp), 1/10 SS (exp), 11/1/09 SS (exp), 8/9/09 SS (exp)
- Kraft Singles are $1.99 with Super Coupon, limit 3. If you have any of the “Serve up a Sandwich” coupon books available at Dominick’s last month, there are $1 off manufacturer coupons inside that will make these just .99. There are also expired coupons out – .50 off in 12/6/09 SS and $1-off-2 in 11/15/09 RP.
Deals continuing from previous weeks:
In the 4/11 SS insert, SOME editions of the Chicago Tribune received a coupon for $5 off Finish Quantumatic dishwasher dispenser in the SS insert.
If you received one and have been looking for a place to spend it, Finish Quantumatic is on sale for $$4.99 at Dominick’s for 12 loads. With coupon…FREE! It’s also on sale for $5 at Target this week — another option if you’re looking to use up this coupon.
Snuggle fabric softener is on sale for $3.99 each when you buy 2 or more at a time (through June 30 – LONG sale!) Buy two and use two of the $3 Snuggle coupons from 3/28 RP or 10/4/09 RP (exp) and pay just .99!
If you go to Dominick’s, look for displays with coupon booklets in them:
Make It Tonight – 20% off all Waterfront Bistro seafood products in the same transaction, $.50 off Safeway Select Artisan French Bread, $1.00 off Safeway Select refrigerated pasta or sauce, $1.00 off Eating Right salad. All expire 5/31/10.
Shrek-Tacluar Savings – $10 worth of General Mills coupons – all expire 6/13/10.
Dominick’s meat deals:
- Whole sliced pork loin is .99/lb.
- Rancher’s Reserve Beef Round Sirloin Tip Roast is $1.99/lb.
Dominick’s produce deals:
- Yellow or white corn on the cob is .25 an ear – it WILL be much cheaper once corn’s in season, but this is the best I’ve seen pricewise this early…
- Green zucchini or yellow neck squash are $1.49/lb.
- Michigan grown asparagus is $1.99/lb.
- 1lb. containers of strawberries are $2.49
AND… if you have the 2010 Entertainment Book, don’t forget that there are four $5 off $50 coupons inside the front cover too. These have staggering dates (two expired in the first quarters of 2010) and the next $5-off-$50 expires 7/31.
If you haven’t ordered the Entertainment Book for this year, it’s also a great buy — Entertainment just reduced these to $15 each with FREE shipping! They do quickly pay for themselves if you like local coupons for restaurants, attractions, and even travel. Coupons I like – $20 off any American Airlines flight for up to 6 tickets, coupons for free weekend rentals for just about every rental car company out there, 15% off any Menards item (great for a BIG purchase!), $5 off at Ace Hardware, $10 gameplay at Dave & Busters and Gameworks, Buy One, Get One Free meals at TGI Fridays, lots of $5-off-$15 and $10-off-$20 restaurant coupons, B1G1F Domino’s pizza, free Auntie Anne’s pretzel, free Cold Stone Creamery ice cream… lots of good stuff. The Chicago book contains over $18,000 worth of coupons (yes, you read that right!) Worth checking out! Walgreens is still selling these for $25 each, so $15 is a great price.
*A note on Dominick’s Super Coupons:
What does “minimum $10 (or $20) purchase required” mean? To use store coupons that include a minimum purchase requirement, you must spend a minimum dollar amount on that shopping trip. You will reach the minimum purchase amount based upon total purchases after your Club Card discount is applied. For example, the regular retail price of a box of Cheerios (after Club Card discounts) will count toward the minimum purchase required in order to use the Cheerios coupon.
Heading over to Meijer, here are your best deals of the week for Meijer stores in in Algonquin, Aurora, Bloomingdale, Bolingbrook, Elgin, McHenry, Oswego, Plainfield, Rolling Meadows, and St. Charles:
Coca-Cola, chips, and “Staycation” deal: Meijer’s running a special on Coke products. Buy $15 worth of Coke products and Meijer potato chips and get 2 free passes to the Shedd Aquarium.
Coke 12-packs of cans and 8-packs of bottles are on sale 3 for $10, or $3.33 each. (I need to check prices on the chips, but I believe they’re $1.99 a bag.) So… if you bought 4 12-packs and a bag of chips, you’d be at $15.32. While this isn’t a fantastic price for the Coke alone, consider that the admission to the Shedd is $24.95 for adults, $17.95 for kids! So… that certainly sweetens the deal as this is cheaper than paying ONE admission to the Shedd, AND you get the Coke and chips :)
The Shedd passes are good through 6/15/10, and then again from 9/7/10-10/15/10.
Here’s a nice high-value Catalina deal from Meijer on General Mills products! This time, it’s a “Spend $20, Get $10” sale, much higher than we typically see from Meijer! Here are your included products and matchups (note that many of these matchups and products are the same as what’s on sale at Jewel this week:)

Note that Meijers in other states are on different schedules. The Illinois Meijers are about a week behind on the sales vs. Indiana/Michigan. If you’re in Illinois, these Meijer deals run through Wednesday. If you’re reading from another state, they ENDED Saturday at your store… Confusing? Yes.
AND, if you shop at the Illinois NILES Meijer location, they haven’t been following the same sale flyer as the other Illinois Meijers, under the convoluted reasoning that because the store is new, people will shop there -without- as many products being on sale. O-kay.
For my Rockford-area shoppers (and Kroger shoppers too!) here are your Hilander sales for the current week…
McCormick GrillMates seasoning mixes are on sale AGAIN! This time, they’re on sale for $1.25 each. Use the $1 coupon from 4/25 RP, or the .50 coupon from 4/18 RP, which will double to $1, and you’ll pay just a quarter!
Deals continuing from last week:
Hilander’s running a “Buy 4, Save $4” instant-savings deal! Mix and match and for every 4 items you buy, you’ll save $4 (the price of each will drop by $1.) Best bets?
Secret Expressions deodorant. They’re $2.50 each when purchased in quantities of 4. You’ll need to buy 2 for this deal, because Hilander’s site has a $3-off-2 ecoupon. Stack this with the .50 coupon from 5/2 PG, which will double to $1. You’ll get $4 in savings on your $5 deodorants, and that makes the cost of each just .50! Now, if you get multiple papers… use another .50 coupon on the second Secret, which also doubles to $1 – and pay ZERO!
Old Spice Body Washes are $2.50 each when purchased in quantities of 4. Buy 2, use a B1G1F coupon from 5/2 PG or 4/18 PG, and stack THAT with the $3-off-2 ecoupon on Hilander’s site. One wash will be free with coupon, and the ecoupon takes off another $3… and you’re in .50 overage. Get paid to take this body wash home! The same deal runs on the Old Spice deodorant (same coupon and ecoupon locations…)
Olay Daily Facials wipes. They’re $3.97 each when purchased in quantities of 4. Use the $2 coupon from 5/2 PG and stack it with the $2 ecoupon on Hilander’s site. With $4 savings on a $3.97 item… it’s FREE!
This is a fun sale!
Hilander meat deals:
- Chicken drumsticks or thighs are .99/lb
- Pork steaks or Western-style ribs are $1.59/lb
- Boneless skinless chicken breasts are $1.77/lb
- Angus ground chuck is $1.77/lb.
- Pork spare ribs are $1.99/lb
Hilander produce deals:
- Red seedless grapes are .97/lb.
Remember too that Hilander doubles coupons up to .55 face value every day! You are only allowed to double two of the SAME coupon per day though — additional coupons will ring at face value. (Split your trips if you’re stocking up!)
Readers outside Illinois will want to check with their local Kroger or Kroger-affiliated stores to determine how they handle coupon doubling.
In the 4/11 SS insert, SOME editions of the Chicago Tribune received a coupon for $5 off Finish Quantumatic dishwasher dispenser in the SS insert.
If you received one and have been looking for a place to spend it, Finish Quantumatic is on sale for $5 for 12 loads. With coupon…FREE! Sale is scheduled to run through 6/5.
Deals continuing from previous weeks:
Target has launched mobile Target coupons which you can load to your phone. They are Target store coupons that you can stack manufacturer coupons with.
Reader Jenn T. writes to say, “You actually do NOT need an internet-capable phone to use these. As long as you sign up to get the text message, then you can go online and print a sheet with the deals for the week. The deals are printed and there is a barcode that can be scanned in the store. I have done this, and you can even do different items on different days. You go to target.com/save, enter your phone number, and voila! Hope this helps other couponers who aren’t paying for data on their phone like me!”

As always, these deals are guidelines for shopping. I can make no guarantee that these items will be on sale, in stock, or available at your area store. I can also not guarantee your Catalinas will print, your cashier will smile at you while you check out, or that your shopping cart won’t have a broken wheel. But I CAN teach you how to save money :)
And, also, as always, a huge thanks to the many readers who posted and emailed deals that made it into today’s Deals of the Week! We’re all in this together, and I sincerely appreciate everyone who spots and passes along good deals that we can all enjoy :) Thank you… to YOU!
* (All You magazine is not a requirement for using the site, but if you like coupons, you will probably really enjoy it. It’s a cheap ($2.49 an issue) magazine that is absolutely filled with coupons each month — typically $50-$100 worth per issue! You can subscribe to All You online and save about $10/year off the cover price. And depending on the values, if you use 2 or 3 coupons alone from each issue, you’ve recouped the cost of the magazine, and you’re on your way to even bigger savings.)

Thanks Jill! I didn’t find those coupon books at Dom., but I did find a different one. I can’t find it now, but it said something like Save $25, and it was a bunch of different stuff including sunscreen and Kleenex…

I tried the catalina at Jewel for the Kelloggs deal. I purchased 5 cereals. The add showed three cereals for $2 but the ad said selected varieties and not only for pictured cereals. There were many Kelloggs cereals that were $2 but none specifically were marked to show the catalina deal. I bought 5 cereals but not all were the ones pictured but all were $2. I did not receive a catalina. I went to customer service and they said it must be the cereals pictured and tried to show me that if they scanned 5 Sugar Pops they would get a $4 coupon. When the employee scanned the cereal 5 times and completed the transaction she did not receive the coupon either. The manager gave me $4. Are the catalina’s only for the pictured cereals? Why don’t they mark the specific merchandise in the aisles. It is very confusing for me and the employees. (I have not attended a couponing class but heard work of mouth so maybe this was covered. I will be attending at a Library near me soon) Thanks for all of your help. I have saved lots.

I bought 8 jars of sauce (4 red, 4white)and 8 boxes of pasta and a $8 beef roast in one transaction. All the pasta rang up free. I scanned 4 $1.50 off beef qs first and then the B1G1 Qs. The B1G1 Q’s did not scan and said item not found. The cashier said I could not use both type of qs but pushed it through anyways by overriding the system for $2 per B1G1. (She knows about couponing and I politely explained the coupon was for the beef and not the sauce)
Later I read online that the B1G1 by itself scanned at 3.49 so I tried again in another transaction with 4 jars but the Doms cashier caught the overage and reduced the scanned value to $2 which is their right off course but I was bummed.

I thought cereal deal at Jewel was for the Just Bunches….and not the Honey Bunches of Oats. Does it work for the Honey Bunches of Oats also???

Can you also use the $4/2 coupon? and only pay .49 oop for two?

I just pulled out the B1G1 for the Classico and it states that you need to buy the Alfredo as one of them…do we need to follow what it says exactly on the coupon or can it all be ‘red’ sauce? Either way, I just wanted to double-check, thanks for any insight! Also, can I use Wags RR at Jewel, I thought I had seen that somewhere at some point, but wasn’t sure? THANK YOU!

I looked up the $2 off coupon on Aussie and it’s actually good on one Aussie styling product when you buy one Aussie shampoo or conditioner. So, you’re not able to just use it to get $2 off the shampoo/conditioner. Not sure if maybe some 5/16 inserts had a different coupon but this is what my inserts had. So you might just want to check it before heading out!

Does anyone know if the catalina deals include Betty Crocker’s gluten-free product line?
I’ve been couponing for awhile now and have been thrown a serious setback. My son must now be on a gluten-free diet, and that stuff is SO EXPENSIVE!!! Does anyone know of any good resources for coupons on gluten-free products?

My vegetarian friend and I exchange meat coupons for her Kashi and other favorite foods. If you still have Kashi printables from the Target website a month or so ago, it’d be a great time to use them now. Kashi cereal, snacks and frozen meals are on sale for $2.88 and Kashi frozen pizzas are 2 for $10. When you buy 5, you get $5 Target gift card. The TARGET coupons (no longer on site) are for all of the included items and can be stacked with manuf. coupons (we found a tear pad during the CHILL deal at Jewel), making it even cheaper. So, if you love Kashi, here’s your deal.

Has anyone tried getting the Right Guard deodorant at Walgreen’s? This morning, my store had it priced at 4.49, not 3.99.

The coupon for the baby basic diapers does state on it a minimum of $8 purchase required. I have used it in the past for diapers when they were on sale for $7.99, but they would not allow it today =(

I went to Meijer for my FIRST trip out to get the Meijer Staycation deal. I went to the Elgin Meijer and grabbed my 4-12 packs of coke and my one bag of Meijer chips and the Free Shedd passes did not print.
I took my case to the service center and they said that the wording is odd, but that you have to have $15 of coke products (COMMA)
and Meijer chips. (The paper ad for the store even says “A combination of $15 of coke products and Meijer chips” but they meant a combo of different kinds of coke.) So you need $15 total of Coke and then add your chips on to that. It’s still a great deal for 2 free Shedd passes.
The service center manager was so nice that she didn’t make me go back and get another coke product and gave me the Shedd tickets anyway, but if others are having the same problem in the W burbs, this could be why.
Thanks!

At CVS in Bartlett there are signs that there is some makeup on clearance for 50-75% off. I don’t know if that’s everywhere, but it might be good with coupons.
Also, at Dom. those Renuzit air freshener crystals are on sale for $4.99, use $3 Q and they’ll be $1.99, but if they let you use that exp. Q for B1G1Free, you’ll get 2 for $1.99! I know that CVS has the starter kit on sale for $3.99 – $3 Q =99c, but I think refill is better because it has twice the amount and you can use any glass container.

4 meats? With the $1.50 off beef coupon, I’m thinking that the 1 coupon per item purchased rule applies. I did the deal today, had 4 $1.50 off beef coupons, and bought 4 small packages of beef. I know the cashier pushed yours through, but just wanted to let you know for future shopping trips (and others, since I know couponing is a learning process!) And I could be wrong, I admit I didn’t read the coupon very closely.

My Jewel didn’t have it advertised on the shelf and didn’t bring ad w/me. (scanners broken too) I assumed it was the regular/smaller size and got charged $2.99. Wrong. Ad says 17 oz. is $1.49 when you buy 4.

I was able to purchase the nitrite/nitrate free hot dogs at Meijer tonight. However, the cashier gave me a hard time about me using the store and manu. coupons together. She said the policy had been “changed”. I, of course, stood my ground and asked to see the policy. I was told by the manager that there was no written policy at the store. They were just expected to “know” the policy. I told her that I did have a copy of the policy at home and would be happy to bring her a copy! :) She graciously allowed me to use the double coupons this time, but assured me that the new policy states that it can no longer be done. So, if you shop the Meijer in Bolingbrook, bring your policy in your purse!

From above, Jenn T. writes to say, “You actually do NOT need an internet-capable phone to use these. As long as you sign up to get the text message, then you can go online and print a sheet with the deals for the week.” This is great news, but now that I have signed up & gotten a confirmation text message, I can’t find where on the Target website that you can print out a list and take it with you if you don’t have data on your phone….looked all around! Any help would be appreciated.

Hi,
I just started in April and I am so glad to say that I am getting the hang of it! This week, my best week to date, I went to Wags and used the RR from the Hydro shavers last week to buy fillers of potting soil (99 cents after in store coupon) tons of the gillette and old spice BOGO body washes and deodorant with the q’s from 5/16 and 5/2PG inserts, got many of Ken’s salad dressing for 99 after 5/9SS $1 off q at Jewel and did the $20 get $5 and 50 box tops, went to Meijer and did two deals of Coke products and two Meijer chips for 4 passes to the Shedd, went to CVS for free herbal essence and used my raincheck for free right guard AND managed to donate blood at the cvs for a 25 dollar CVS gift card and 11 dollars for Oberweis ice cream!!! WOW I FEEL GREAT, THANK YOU FOR THE OPENING MY EYES! This is definitely the way to shop! I have been able to stock up, give forward, and save lives with my blood donation all in one week!!!!
Happy to call myself a super couponer!

Texas Brookshires, Yee Ha!!! Everything is still big in good ole TX’s. I noticed Ronzoni Pasta was half price, the Healthy Harvest whole wheat pasta and the Smart Taste pasta, normally $1.98 on sale for .98, and I got several coupons online for .50 off and .75 off and ended up getting 4 boxes of Healthy for $2 and 4 boxes of Smart for $1. I got $16 worth of pasta for $3, but wait, I noticed that the McCormicks Grill Mates was on sale two for one, $1.98 for two, and I just happened to get several .99 off coupons online and in the Sunday Paper, so I was able to score 8 Grill Mates, a $16 value that I only paid $4. for and one large Pepper on sale for .99 that I got for free w/Coupon. So to sum it up, I scored $33 worth for $7, Yea, sales are also big in Texas!!! My daughter is going to print off some more coupons for me on her computer and go get some more pasta for our neighbor that is out of work, just sharing a little, see ya at Brookshires!!! Have a nice day, Chandler & Lynn

Went into the Elgin Target at lunch to get 3 travel size Tides using the 5/2 P&G coupons.
Manager tells me they cannot accept them because they don’t get re-imbursed for them. I can only use them on the actual ‘pictured’ item(s).
I explained to him that I do not have a problem with this at the West Dundee store.
His reply: we no longer will accept them for the travel size.
Guess I won’t be going to that store for any of my Target purchases.
